Porali- 3/5. Engaging and engrossing 1st half but end loses steam. Sasikumar - Samuthirakani r in fine form. Sasi is superb carries the show
Porali- Sasi & Kani's commercial mix of comedy, soft romance, action scenes holds the film together. Music weak. Forced happy ending.

Dam 999 director moves Supreme Court against ban

    2011-11-30 21:30:00
    Last Updated: 2011-12-01 09:28:38

The director of the film 'Dam 999', which has been banned in Tamil Nadu for supposedly taking a pro-Kerala stand in the Mullaperiyar dam row, Wednesday said he had filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the move.
The film has been made with a 'global view' as dams have collapsed in Brazil, China and other countries and the ban by the Tamil Nadu government was unjustified, director Sohan Roy told a press conference.

The film deals with the miseries of people following the collapse of a dam. But its critics say it tries to portray the dispute over the century-old Mullaperiyar Dam, which is situated in Kerala and supplies water to Tamil Nadu.

Panic spread among the residents in four districts of Kerala recently following some earthquakes.

Kerala has demanded the construction of a new dam, but Tamil Nadu says the old dam is safe.

Tamil Nadu banned the film saying that the film's Tamil version can ignite passions and cause a law and order situation in the state.

    PORAALI MOVIE REVIEW
Review by : Behindwoods Review Board

Starring: Sasi Kumar, Swathi, Allari Naresh, Kancha Karuppu
    Direction: Samuthirakani
    Music: Sundar C Babu
    Production: Company Production

The Samudirakani-Sasikumar teamwork is back again with the former wielding the baton and the latter applying the greasepaint in Company Productions Poraali. This combination always stirs up expectations, thanks to their appreciated previous outings Subramaniapuram, Nadodigal and Easan.
The arc of Poraali springs from Aristotle’s words-Man is a social animal. And director Samudirakani goes on to say it is an uphill task to carry on in this world which is overcrowded with animals in the guise of humans. And hence people who manage to struggle and survive in such a scenario are indeed the ‘Poraali’s or Warriors.
In Poraali, Samudirakani has dichotomized his film’s setting as urban for first half and rural for the second half. The story completely rests on Sasikumar’s shoulders whose fiery and powerful eyes do the major talking for him. With flowing mane on his shoulders and riding on twin horses, the director/actor/producer crafts a neat performance.
Allari Naresh provides the appropriate foil and when Ganja Karuppu joins him, the humor quotient works well. Notable example is the scene when Swati’s sister curses them both for the food that has been regularly supplied to them did not serve its purpose. Ganja Karuppu’s antics belong to the harmless category with dialogues like ‘Eppavo kedaikkara paal govaa vida ippa kedaikkara pepperminte thevalai’ generating a smile.
Nivedha, the new find make you notice, Swati Reddy is apt but it is Vasundhara who scores well in a very small role. There are also Sasi-Kani’s regulars like Jayaprakash, Namo Narayana and others. The perpetual drinker who helps Sasikumar in tricky situations is effective and Parotta Suri with a recurring statement annoys mostly.
Poraali opens up majestically with Sasikumar riding on horses followed by a gripping chase and murder sequence. However this situation goes unexplained till the end leaving the audience clueless about its inclusion. The first half moves fairly at a uniform pace and there are minor twists that keep the narration going. The optimistic feel that is being conveyed is also something that is praiseworthy.
Comedy works in tandem with the narration which lightens up the mood most of the time. Samudirakani has shown the diverse nature of human beings through individuals residing in different portions in a lower middle class house.
However with the advent of second half and the flash back sequences, director struggles to keep his narration tight. This is majorly due to a very lengthy action sequences, some of them even gory and the maker loses his grip over his audience. To add to the woes, the sequences at the asylum are not for faint hearts and are quite disturbing. If these shots have been pruned, the effect could have been better.
There are many characters in Sasikumar’s household and it takes a while to get clarity on their relationships. Some scenes do give a docu feel and when Sasikumar continues to mouth preachy dialogues, a sense of tedium sets in. There may not be many people who could relate to such an issue in today’s setting.
Sundar C Babu’s music is just about ordinary and so are the other technical departments of the film. It would have been an engaging flick had the director tightened his screen play in the second half. All the same, Kani and Sasi need to be appreciated for their earnest attempt.
Verdict: This earnest Poraali needed more power.

The Sasikumar- Samuthirakani combination is back with Poraali. Their aim seems to be making Sasi a commercial action hero, and it has succeeded to a large extent. The film has a great first half but the problem lies in the second half when the tone suddenly turns exceedingly manipulative, and the screenplay deviates from the central premise and crams in too much violence and peters down to a forced happy ending after a lot of bloodshed. Despite these hiccups, it is an engaging film because of its witty dialogues and Sasikumar’s performance.
The plot- Ilamkumaran (Sasikumar) and Nallavan (Allari Naresh) escapes from a mental asylum on a rainy night and come to Chennai. They stay with Pulikutty (GanjaKaruppu) in a colony with some interesting people around. They get a job in a petrol pump but soon due to their earnestness and goodness, start a new venture which slowly picks up.
The first half moves at rapid pace with romance and humour running as undercurrent till we reach the interval point when the twist happens. A group of people are in search of the duo and what is their past is told later.
The message Samuthirakani is trying to say that there is an animal lurking in all of us, and it is society which labels a man as 'Mad'. The director himself in the beginning says that he wants to convey the Aristotle teaching- Man is a social animal. And his hero is carved out of the theory that it is circumstances which makes a person a warrior (Poraali)!
Sasikumar plays Kumaran with a subtly simmering charm and he carries the show to the winning post with some sparky dialogues. Allari Naresh is in fine form and he scores in the scenes which demand a lot from him. Swati passes muster but it is new girl Nivetha as Mari and Vasundhara as Tamilchelvi who scores.
One of the major drawbacks of the film is that Sundar C Babu’s music falls flat. Sasikumar films are known for atleast one hummable tune, but sadly even the Koothu song lacks the verve. There are far too many characters which confuses and violence in the second half.
On the whole,Poraali has its heart in the right place, and Sasikumar’s charismatic, alluring appeal lifts this film considerably.
    Verdict- Above Average

Poraali - Man with a mission

    IndiaGlitz [Friday, December 02, 2011] 6 Comments
They have a passion for rendering meaningful movies. From 'Subramaniapuram' till 'Eesan', they came out with films that leave an impact with the masses. Joining the list is 'Poraali', from the famous Sasikumar-Samuthirakani duo.
The title may mislead you. For, it is a movie that is more than action or a revenge plot. It speaks about human emotions, however in a familiar way.
Director Samuthirakani presents the lives of four individuals. He narrates their passion, aspirations in style. Sasikumar is the pivot around whom the whole story revolves. He brings solidity and dignity to the role.
Tollywood's 'Allari' Naresh plays second fiddle to Sasikumar and carries the role with substance. The first half is set in Chennai and in total contrast is the latter part that unfolds in a rural village.
The movie begins with two youngsters, Ilankumaran (Sasikumar) and Nallavan (Naresh), who come from a village to settle in Chennai to make a livelihood. The two are noble-hearted and ensure that they go hammer and tongs to help everyone around.
They manage to get shelter at the compound where Pulikutty (Kanja Karuppu) lives. The place houses many interesting families who have their own problems, but live their lives in an interesting way. All these are narrated in a hilarious manner.
Both Kumaran and Nallavan get a job in a petrol station and thanks to their hardwork and sincerity, they win the admiration of the properitor. There is Bharathy (Swathy), a group dancer in films, who lives in the same compound. A good samaritan, Kumaran slowly wins the admiration of one and all.
Bharathy falls for Kumaran's noble ways. Kumaran too reciprocates her love. When all things go well, there's a twist in store. A gang of men with sickles arrive from a village and the chase begins. They madly run behind the two. Eventually the identity of Kumaran and Nallavan is revealed.
Sasikumar's charm and aura is prevalent all through. He burdens the whole responsibility on his shoulders and delivers a decent performance. His dialogue delivery is awesome. Though his role seems to be an extension of what he did in 'Nadodigal', still Sasikumar manages to give a distinct look to it.
'Allari' Naresh compliments Sasikumar well. Swathi seems to have graduated a lot since her 'Subramaniapuram' days. She is chirpy, bubbly and has limited scope in the story. Vasundhara plays a cameo and she suits the role to a T.
Jayaprakash does a short but a strong role. After a long interval, both Ganja Karuppu and Parotta Soori get meaty characters to do in this film.
Sundar C Babu seems to have relived 'Nadodigal' music. Especially numbers like 'Yaar Ivan...' and the theme music sound familiar. Kathir's cinematography deserves a special mention. He brings the right variation in terms of lighting and tone in capturing the city life and that of the events in a village.
Dilip Subbaarayan's pacy stunt choreography and RK Nagaraj's art direction steal the show. However 'Poraali' does suffer from some minuses. A lengthy second half with jerks in narration and too much blood and gore could have been avoided. The climax takes us on one de ja vu ride.
On the whole, 'Poraali' provides sparkling moments that will linger in our hearts.
