Ala Vaikunthapuramulo Remake
Bhediya (2022)
A mix of charming pulpy horror and campy monster fun.
While most of its appeal is merely surface-level novelty, Bhediya is a solid effort and a delightful divergence for Bollywood. Told with wry humor while tapping into captivating quadrants of werewolf lore, the film uses every trick in the Hammer Horror book to weave an intriguing, atmospheric, and witty creature feature.
If nothing else, one can’t shake how it doesn’t add up to as much as it could have been with a more ambitious screenplay, but as a piece of disposable entertainment, it does its job. With a keenly assembled ensemble led by a riveting Varun Dhawan, Bhediya is an interesting horror comedy that offers equal helpings of either genre, and adds up to a whole lot of fun in the bargain.
PS: The mid-credits scene is a hoot.
