Uruguay striker Luis Suarez rejoins first club Nacional on free transfer

Luis Suarez is Uruguay's all-time top goalscorer with 68 goals in 132 matches

Former Liverpool and Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has rejoined his first club Nacional in his native Uruguay.
The 35-year-old was a free agent after leaving Atletico Madrid when his contract expired this summer.

Nacional, who finished runners-up in the Primera Division last season, have not disclosed the length of the deal.

"I am proud to wear my shirt again at Nacional," Suarez wrote on social media.
"Thank you all for the support. See you soon." Approximately 20,000 Nacional fans wore Suarez masks at a recent game after their side was linked with the forward.

"Happy to have you home," said the club.
Suarez made his professional debut for Nacional at 18, in 2005, helping them win the Uruguayan league title by scoring 10 goals in 27 league matches.
He earned a move to Europe with Dutch side Groningen the following season and then signed for Ajax a year later.
A transfer to Liverpool followed in 2011 before he joined Barcelona, where he won four Spanish league titles and one Champions League trophy between 2014 and 2020.
He won La Liga again in his first season with Atletico, scoring 21 goals in 32 games.
Suarez is Uruguay's all-time leading goal-scorer, having scored 68 goals in 132 international matches.

Barcelona, Manchester City in thrilling 3-3 draw in ALS charity match

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay scored for Barcelona. Manchester City got goals from Julin lvarez, Cole Palmer and Riyad Mahrez deep into stoppage time.
Barcelona and Manchester City drew 3-3 in a friendly to raise money and awareness for the fight against ALS on Wednesday (August 24). More than 91,000 fans were at the Camp Nou for the match, with the proceeds going to help raise funds for research against ALS, also known as Lou Gehrigs disease, an incurable neurodegenerative disorder.
The honorary kickoff was taken by Juan Carlos Unzu, the former Barcelona goalkeeper and goalkeeping coach who has the disease and helped promote the friendly. We want to continue living and enjoying life, he said before the match.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay scored for the hosts. Man City got goals from Julin lvarez, Cole Palmer and Riyad Mahrez deep into stoppage time.
Man City defender Luke Mbete had to be substituted late in the game after a clash of heads with Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen. Mbete had to be immobilized and carried out on a stretcher.
Erling Haaland won a penalty deep in stoppage time, which Mahrez converted. The charity game had originally been scheduled for last summer but was postponed because of COVID-19 restrictions on attendances.

It had been organised to raise funds for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) awareness, in honour of former Barcelona player and coach Juan Carlos Unzue, who was diagnosed with the condition just over two years ago.
Guardiola, whose side host Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday, named a strong side for the game that included summer signing Kalvin Phillips, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva, who is reportedly the subject of interest from Barcelona.
Depays late strike had looked to have won the match, which was played in front of 91,062 spectators, but Mahrez equalised from the spot in the 10th minute of 11 minutes that had been added on following an injury to Citys Luke Mbete.

Benzema crowned the 2022 Ballon dOr winner

Karim Benzema has been named Ballon dOr winner for 2022, with the Real Madrid striker enjoying an incredible calendar year.

Blancos striker scored 44 goals last season
    Claimed domestic & European titles
Eighth Real Madrid player to win a Golden Ball

WHAT HAPPENED? The France international enjoyed a remarkable 2021-22 campaign at Santiago Bernabeu, with a stunning 44-goal haul helping Los Blancos to La Liga and Champions League titles. The 34-year-old found the target on 27 occasions in the Spanish top flight last season and 15 times in European competition.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Benzema has been a revelation for Madrid, helping to fill the void created by Cristiano Ronaldos departure in 2018 while also taking on captaincy duties following Sergio Ramos move to Paris Saint-Germain. He has now been recognised as the worlds best by his peers, with competition from the likes of Mohamed Salah, Robert Lewandowski, Sadio Mane, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland seen off to land the prestigious Golden Ball.

Man Utd owners the Glazers consider selling club

There have been regular protests at Old Trafford about the Glazer family's ownership of the club.
Manchester United's owners the Glazer family say they are considering selling the club as they "explore strategic alternatives".
It comes after years of protest from fans against their ownership.

A statement from the club said the board will "consider all strategic alternatives, including new investment into the club, a sale, or other transactions involving the company".
It added that the process "will include an assessment of several initiatives to strengthen the club, including stadium and infrastructure redevelopment, and expansion of the club's commercial operations on a global scale" to enhance "the long-term success of the club's men's, women's and academy teams, and bringing benefits to fans and other stakeholders".
In 2012, the Glazers sold 10% of their holding via a stock listing and have sold further shares in the following years.

"As we seek to continue building on the club's history of success, the board has authorised a thorough evaluation of strategic alternatives," said executive co-chairmen and directors Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer.
"We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans and that Manchester United maximizes the significant growth opportunities available to the club today and in the future.
"Throughout this process we will remain fully focused on serving the best interests of our fans, shareholders, and various stakeholders."
Manchester United fans break on to Old Trafford pitch to protest against club ownership. The Glazer family have owned NFL side Tampa Bay Buccaneers since 1995 and Avram Glazer bought a team in the new United Arab Emirates Twenty20 cricket league in 2021.

Joel and Avram took over the day-to-day running of United after their father Malcolm suffered a stroke in April 2006. Billionaire Malcolm died aged 85 in 2014.
American investment firm Raine Group, who handled Chelsea's 4.25bn sale in May, is acting as United's exclusive financial advisor.
The statement from the club added: "There can be no assurance that the review being undertaken will result in any transaction involving the company.
"Manchester United does not intend to make further announcements regarding the review unless and until the board has approved a specific transaction or other course of action requiring a formal announcement."

United, who are fifth in the Premier League, have not won the title since 2013 and have not won a trophy since claiming the Europa League and EFL Cup in 2017.
There have been multiple protests against the Glazers' ownership in recent years, including one in May 2021 which caused United's home league match against Liverpool to be postponed.
Thousands of supporters marched to Old Trafford in protest before the same fixture this season, in August.
United were part of the failed European Super League project which rapidly collapsed in April 2021. Manchester United co-chairman Joel Glazer later apologised for the unrest caused.
He has since attended fans' forums in the wake of supporter unrest and pledged to make shares available to the club's followers.

According to Transfermarkt, United have a net spend of 1.36bn euros (1.18bn) on transfers under the Glazers, with only Manchester City having a higher figure in that period.
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who left Manchester United with immediate effect on Tuesday, criticised the club ownership in a controversial interview last week saying the Glazer family "don't care about the club" on the sporting side.
The move to sell United comes after Liverpool chairman Tom Werner said Fenway Sports Group were "exploring a sale" of the Anfield club.
A Bloomberg report in August 2022 said the Glazer family were willing to sell a minority stake in the club.
British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe said he would be interested in buying United before he stated in October that the Glazer family had told him they did not want to sell.

'If the Glazers are to leave, most fans would welcome it' - analysis

There has never been any real dispute that the Glazers see Manchester United as a financial investment.
To a greater or lesser degree - co-chairmen Joel and Avram being the most invested - they are interested in the football side but the main aim is to make money, which they have succeeded at.
To that end, a few issues have conspired to make the Glazers think now is a good time to test the water with regard to an exit.
First, the European Super League plan was killed off. Whilst Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid are adamant it will get clearance through the courts, in its original form, it is done - and with it, the riches that would have come from it.
Then, Saudi Arabia's backing of Newcastle creates more competition within the Premier League and, eventually, Europe.
Added to the huge investment required on an Old Trafford refit - and improvements at the club's Carrington training ground - running a competitive United, in the short-term, is going to be very costly.
To that end, the 4.25bn Chelsea was sold for in the summer starts to look very attractive.
The Glazers have not been popular owners since the day they bought United in 2005.
If they are to leave, most fans would welcome it. However, given the likely selling price, their dream of ownership may be unrealistic.
And, even if a boyhood supporter fan Sir Jim Ratcliffe follows up his summer plan to attempt to buy the club, he is unlikely to be the only interested party. In the short-term, the future at Old Trafford may just bring more uncertainty.

Telstar, Azteca, Jabulani, Al Rihla: A short history of Fifa World Cup balls

Ball technology has undergone massive changes over the years. The match ball for the Qatar World Cup is the fastest ever, and has a sensor inside it to help decide off-side calls.

Fifa says the ball provides a vital element for the detection of tight offside incidents as an inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor is placed at its centre. (Source: news.adidas.com)
Fifa claims that Al Rihla, the official match ball for the Qatar World Cup, travels faster than any other in the tournaments history. It is still early days in the tournament to sit in judgment on that claim. However, its a good time to understand the nuances of the 14th successive ball created by Adidas for Fifa World Cups, starting from Mexico 1970, as well as the history of match balls for the showpiece event.

Name and design of the World Cup ball

In Arabic, Al Rihla means the journey. The name is believed to be a reference to a travelogue written by Ibn Battuta, the 14th-century explorer who travelled around Asia, Europe and Africa.
Al Rihla is the first World Cup ball to be made exclusively with water-based inks and glues, as sustainability was a key priority for the makers, according to a Fifa statement. Its bold and vibrant colour is inspired by Qatars culture, architecture, iconic boats and flag, the games governing body noted after revealing the ball in March this year.
The main design features of the ball, according to Fifa, are a CRT core and a speedshell. The core provides speed, accuracy and consistency for fast-paced action and precision, with maximal shape and air retention, as well as rebound accuracy. The speedshell is a textured polyurethane skin with a new 20-piece panel shape, improving accuracy, flight stability and swerve.

Al Rihlas role in the offside technology

Fifa has used for the first time a semi-automated technology for off-side calls in this World Cup. It uses 12 dedicated tracking cameras mounted underneath the roof of the stadium to track the ball and up to 29 data points of each individual player, 50 times per second, calculating their exact position on the pitch.
Al Rihla, Fifa says, provides a vital element for the detection of tight offside incidents as an inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor is placed in the centre of the ball. This sensor sends ball data to the video operation room 500 times per second, allowing a very precise detection of the kick point.

Early years of Fifa World Cup balls

The first World Cup in 1930 had no official ball. Before the final, hosts Uruguay and Argentina sparred over the choice of the match ball and reached a compromise that the first half would be played with Argentinas choice Tiento, followed by the T-model, preferred by Uruguay in the second half. Curiously, Uruguay overturned a 1-2 deficit to win 4-2 with their preferred ball and became champions.

In 1950, the World Cup returned after a 12-year break, owing to World War II, with Duplo T, which did not have laces. It had valves through which the ball could be inflated with a pump and a needle.

Adidas entered the scene in 1970

    * At Mexico 1970, Adidas came into the picture for the first time, introducing a 32-panel black-and-white design for its iconic Telstar. The visibility of the ball on television improved considerably as a result. At West Germany 1974, Adidas became an official partner of Fifa as the companys name featured on the ball for the first time.
    * As the World Cup returned to Mexico in 1986, Adidas introduced Azteca, the first fully synthetic ball to be used in the history of the World Cup. The ball retained its shape after being kicked and fared much better than leather balls in water resistance and durability.

Azteca in 1986 was the first fully synthetic ball to be used in the history of the World Cup. (Source: Wikimedia Commons)
    * France 1998 saw multicoloured balls in use for the first time. Tricolore had the colours of the French flag red, white and blue adorning the triads.

    * 12 years later, at South Africa 2010, Adidas produced the most controversial World Cup ball of all time Jabulani. The manufacturer reduced the number of panels to eight to make the ball more round but its unpredictable behaviour in the air made the players, especially goalkeepers such as Gianluigi Buffon of Italy and Julio Cesar of Brazil, extremely unhappy.

    * After the troubles with Jabulani, when Brazil 2014 came around, Adidas sent out samples of the Brazuca to teams and players well in advance for the feedback. The ball, made of six polyurethane panels, fared much better than Jabulani.

In the last World Cup in Russia, Adidas reinvented the classic Telstar model of 1970 with a brand-new panel design.

Not all goalkeepers are happy with Al Rihla

Balls travelling faster and faster has been making life difficult for goalkeepers and some of them in Qatar have already aired their disapproval of Al Rihla.
Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet said ahead of his teams opening match, Year after year, it gets better for the strikers and for us goalkeepers it gets very tough.
However, Englands reserve goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale vouches that Al Rihla is probably one of the better Adidas balls he has played with. Ive never felt another World Cup ball, so I cant go off that, but Ive played with Adidas balls before, and European Championship balls and stuff, so it seems fine to me.
