EU's top court rules UEFA, FIFA can't block Super League

Europe's top court ruled that UEFA's control of European football is an illegal monopoly under EU competition law on Thursday, in a significant boost to the Super League project.
The Super League and its backers, A22 Sports, argued that UEFA's prohibition of the would-be competition -- first launched in April 2021 -- and its threatened punishments for participating clubs were incompatible with Europe's laws on freedom of competition.

Thursday's ruling by the European Court of Justice [ECJ] found that FIFA and UEFA's rules requiring new football competitions to be subject to their prior approval were "contrary to EU law."
"The FIFA and UEFA rules making any new interclub football project subject to their prior approval, such as the Super League, and prohibiting clubs and players from playing in those competitions, are unlawful," the court said. "There is no framework for the FIFA and UEFA rules ensuring that they are transparent, objective, non-discriminatory and proportionate.
"Similarly, the rules giving FIFA and UEFA exclusive control over the commercial exploitation of the rights related to those competitions are such as to restrict competition, given their importance for the media, consumers and television viewers in the European Union."

The court found that organising football competitions is an economic activity and "therefore must comply with the competition rules and respect the freedom of movement."
The decision goes against a non-binding opinion issued by the court's Advocate General in December 2022, which had argued that UEFA and FIFA's regulations -- and UEFA's role as sole governing and disciplinary body for European football -- were in line with EU law.

The court found that FIFA and UEFA were "abusing a dominant position" in their control of the football market. It did make clear that its ruling "does not mean that a competition such as the Super League project must necessarily be approved," saying that it was a verdict on FIFA and UEFA's rules in general, rather than any specific project.
Nevertheless, the decision is a significant boost for the Super League project, which seeks to replace UEFA's Champions League.
"We've won the right to compete," Bernd Reichart, A22 Sports CEO said. "UEFA's monopoly is over. Football is free. Now the clubs won't suffer threats and punishments. They're free to decide their own future."

An initial 12 clubs -- the Premier League's Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, LaLiga's Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid and Serie A's AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus -- signed up as members of the breakaway Super League for its launch on April 18, 2021, in a move that stunned the football world. The project, led by Real Madrid's Florentino Perez and Juventus' Andrea Agnelli, was born of frustration at UEFA's dominant role as Champions League organisers, and unhappiness at the competition's format and revenue model.

Vocal opposition from football's governing bodies, fans and politicians -- in particular, in England -- quickly led nine of those clubs to announce their withdrawal from the project, with just Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus remaining as public backers.

When the Super League revealed its plans, the competition filed a lawsuit with a Spanish court asking for protection to pre-empt possible UEFA sanctions.
The judge in Madrid granted a preliminary injunction, before passing the case on to the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg for a verdict.
In October 2022, A22 Sports -- led by Reichart - began the relaunch and rebranding of the Super League, proposing a more open, meritocratic format.

"For the fans: we'll broadcast all the Super League games for free," Reichart said on Thursday. "For the clubs: club income and solidarity payments in football are guaranteed."

Soccer-Roma sack manager Mourinho following poor run

AS Roma can confirm that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff will leave the club with immediate effect, the club said in a statement.
Further updates on the new first team coaching staff will follow imminently.

Roma have taken just four points from their last five league matches, and were eliminated from the Coppa Italia last week in a 1-0 defeat to rivals Lazio.
Following that defeat, Mourinho had likened himself to fictional wizard Harry Potter, saying his position at the club was raising fans expectations for success.
He also hit back at critics, labelling himself as the perfect example of professionalism despite his team suffering recent poor results.

We would like to thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club, club owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin said in a statement.
We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.
We wish Jose and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours.

Mourinho, who has coached a host of top European clubs including Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United, was appointed coach of Roma in 2021.
Under the Portuguese manager, Roma won the third-tier Europa Conference League in 2022. He also led them to the Europa League final in 2023, where they were beaten on penalties by Sevilla.

Kalinga Super Cup final: East Bengal end trophy drought, defeat Odisha FC 3-2

The last time East Bengal won a major trophy was in September 2012 when they won the Federation Cup defeating Dempo SC in Siliguri

East Bengal won a major trophy after more than 11 years when they defeated Odisha FC 3-2 in the Kalinga Super Cup final at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Sunday. The teams were locked 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes.

The last time East Bengal won a national-level trophy was on September 30, 2012, when they lifted the Federation Cup, prevailing over Dempo SC 3-2 in Siliguri.
Sundays triumph also ensured that Carles Cuadrats side will feature in the preliminary stage of the AFC Champions League 2.

It was a game of two halves, as Odisha took the lead through Diego Mauricio in the first half before Nandhakumar Sekars strike and Saul Crespos penalty swung the pendulum in favour of East Bengal. Odisha centre-back Mourtada Fall was also sent off for a second bookable offence, putting the advantage squarely at East Bengals feet.

    Highlights

    • Manchester City have signed highly-rated youngster Claudio Echeverri for just 12.5m, with high expectations for his future.
    • Echeverri will continue developing at River Plate before joining City in 2024, with a contract running until 2028.
    • Echeverri has been compared to Lionel Messi and is considered one of the best young talents in football, making him a potential bargain for City.

Manchester City have signed highly-rated youngster Claudio Echeverri from River Plate in a deal worth just 12.5m. The forward has emerged as a seriously exciting prospect in recent months, with many within football expecting huge things from him in the future. The Cityzens are the side that have bagged his signature, though, with the club announcing the deal.
Echeverri will spend the remainder of 2024 with River Plate, allowing him to continue developing with the side before he's ready to make an impact at the Etihad in the Premier League next year. The youngster has signed a contract with Pep Guardiola's side that will run until 2028, ensuring City have control of him and his development for the next few years which should excite everyone associated with the club.

Back in his native Argentina, where he's been making a name for himself at River Plate, Echeverri has been labeled the 'next Lionel Messi' by those that have watched his career closely so far. It's quite an astonishing claim and will set expectations for his career at an incredibly high level going forward. He's even been included in The Guardian's 60 best young talents in all of football right now.

If he's even half as good as the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has been throughout his career, he'll be one hell of a bargain for City at just 12.5m.

Al-Hilal vanquish bitter rivals Al-Nassr 2-0 to win Riyadh Season Cup

Al-Hilal win the Riyadh Season Cup.

Al-Hilal defeated Al-Nassr 2-0 in the Riyadh Season Cup on Thursday, just days before the Roshn Saudi League resumes after the break for the Asian Cup. It was the first chance to see many of Saudi Arabias best players in action again after the recent continental campaign.

That had ended earlier than had been hoped for after a penalty shootout defeat at the hands of South Korea, but while Saudi Arabian fans may have been disappointed at the national team crashing out of the continental competition, they at least welcomed the return of domestic action. And there was plenty of that to excite observers at the Kingdom Arena.
League leaders Al-Hilal may not have been at their best at the newly built arena, but they were clinical when the chances came, and are still obviously the team to beat over the rest of the season.
Two goals in the first half did the damage for the leaders, who are currently seven points clear at the top of the table with 11 games remaining.

Both the Riyadh giants fielded strong teams Cristiano Ronaldo started the match for the Yellows but it was the team in blue who were on top for most of the 90 minutes.
The first goal came after 17 minutes. Saud Abdulhamid, one of the stars of the Asian Cup, advanced down the right to pull the ball back toward a crowded penalty area. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic calmly stepped forward on the edge of the 18-yard box to sweep a low shot past the outstretched hand of Raghed Al-Najjar to make it 1-0.
Al-Hilal continued to stream forward and Brazilian star Malcom came close to extending the lead for the 18-time champions, though his shot from the edge of the area was well saved by the Nassr goalkeeper.

    .

Soon after, his Brazilian compatriot Michael danced around defenders on the edge of the area only to see his final shot blocked.
The lead was doubled after 30 minutes when Salem Al-Dawsari netted a beautiful goal. Fed by Malcom, the Asian player of the year took possession 30 meters from goal and then advanced to chip a perfect shot over Al-Najjar from just outside the area. Later in the game Al-Dawsari seemed to pick up an injury but nevertheless left the pitch to a standing ovation from the Al-Hilal fans.
Al-Nassr started to impose themselves as the game wore on and Ronaldo, who had been taunted by the home fans with chants of Messi, Messi, became more influential.
However, Al-Hilals defense held firm as they dug in to show their resilience in the face of concerted pressure.

The league title is more important, though, and there is a lot of football still to be played.
Al-Hilal are still top of the standings and were superior, but Al-Nassr showed that they have what it takes to push their Riyadh rivals all the way. It promises to be an exciting final third of the season.

AFC Asian Cup Final: Akram Afif Powers Qatar To Second Consecutive Title After Win Over Jordan

Afif had distinguished himself as the standout player for his country since the tournament's inception. He demonstrated his prowess when the responsibility to deliver crucial moments against Jordan fell on his shoulders, ultimately leading Qatar to become the first team since Japan in 2000 and 2004 to achieve back-to-back victories.

    Qatar players lift trophy.

Akram Afif dropped to his knees. Pretty soon he was being thrown into the air by his joyous teammates after the forward's hat trick of penalties secured back-to-back Asian Cup titles for Qatar. Afif, the outstanding player of the tournament and leading scorer with eight goals, was nerveless when converting his spot kicks in a 3-1 win against Jordan at Lusail Stadium on Saturday.
Just over a year ago it had been Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe who had lit up this spectacular venue in arguably the greatest World Cup final of all time. On this occasion it was Afif taking center stage and becoming the first player to score a hat trick in the Asian Cup final.
He had been his country's standout performer from the start of the tournament and did not disappoint when it fell to him to produce the decisive moments against Jordan as Qatar became the first back-to-back winner since Japan in 2000 and 2004.

In front of more than 86,000 fans and with the pressure on, Afif never looked likely to miss from the spot and he sparked wild celebrations with each goal.
"(I scored) the penalties because of the confidence my teammates had in me. It is not about technique, it is about the feeling that people are behind me - my team, Afif said.
He won and converted his first penalty in the 22nd minute. And after Yazan Al Naimat leveled the game in the 67th he struck again from the spot in the 73rd and sealed the win in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
Afif had spoken earlier in the tournament of his wish to return to European soccer after spells in Spain and Belgium at the start of his career. His performances, which also earned him the award for the Asian Cup's most valuable player, will likely have caught the attention of clubs far and wide.
While this was a personal triumph for him, it was redemption for Qatar, which had endured a miserable World Cup on home soil in 2022 when exiting the tournament after three straight defeats in the group stage.
Even as host and defending champion, Qatar had been an unexpected finalist, let alone winner. Captain Hassan Al-Haydos noted on the eve of the final how critics had expected little of the team ahead of the tournament.
How satisfying for him, then, to be draped in the same type of black Qatari ceremonial robe that Messi had worn to lift the World Cup.
After the pain of that tournament, here was a moment of national celebration as the Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani handed Al-Haydos the trophy and shortly after there was an eruption of tickertape and fireworks.
Earlier, Qatar's Spanish coach, Mrquez Lpez slumped in his seat, seemingly exhausted, as he waited out 17 minutes of stoppage time.
The exertions of the past month appeared to have taken its toll. He had only been hired in December and Qatar had been beaten 2-1 by Jordan in a friendly in January.
It was a very difficult game. The tension was high, he said. Maybe it was not the beautiful football everyone wished for, but everyone remembers the winner. Like Afif, Lpez was also thrown into the air as part of the celebrations.
Despite a difficult buildup after taking over from predecessor Carlos Queiroz, Lpez impressively guided Qatar to a successful defense of the title it won in 2019. It became the eighth host nation to win the tournament.

IVORY COAST WIN AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS AFTER WILD TOURNAMENT

Despite losing 4-0 to Equatorial Guinea in the group stages, sacking manager Jean-Louis Gasset mid-tournament and replacing him with assistant Emerse Fae, squeaking past Senegal on penalties in the last 16, grabbing a last-minute equaliser against Mali before edging that quarter-final in extra time Ivory Coast have somehow come away with the Africa Cup of Nations trophy after the wildest of runs.

Sebastian Haller was the hero as Ivory Coast came from behind to beat Nigeria 2-1 and claim their third Africa Cup of Nations title.

The host nation delighted their fans in Abidjan with Haller completing a wonderful turnaround as he volleyed home the winner nine minutes from time after Franck Kessie cancelled out William Troost-Ekongs first-half header.

Ivory Coast started brightly and created the better first-half chances with Max Gradel and Simon Adingra going close.

However, it was Nigeria who took the lead seven minutes before the break, when Troost-Ekong nodded home his third goal of the tournament.

The Super Eagles were unbeaten in their previous 22 matches in the competition when scoring first, but the hosts hit back just after the hour mark as Kessie nodded in Adringas corner.

Adingra was involved again as the Elephants snatched a dramatic winner in the 81st minute, the Brighton & Hove Albion winger crossing for Haller to prod past Stanley Nwabali at the near post.

TALKING POINT CANCER SURVIVOR HALLER THE HERO AS HOST NATION COMPLETES AFCON HAT-TRICK

What a journey it has been for Ivory Coast - and what a journey it has been for Sebastian Haller.

Prior to this year, no team had ever finished third in their Africa Cup of Nations group and subsequently gone on to lift the trophy. The Elephants appeared down and out during the group stages. Head coach Jean-Louis Gasset was replaced in the dugout by his assistant Emerse Fae.

After scraping through Group A as the fourth-best third-placed team, Ivory Coast battled past reigning champions Senegal on penalties and needed extra-time to see off Mali. They then overcame Congo DR 1-0 in the semi-final, and have come from behind to complete the most remarkable hat-trick of victories adding to their triumphs in 1992 and 2015.

And what can we say about Haller? Diagnosed with testicular cancer in July 2022 for which he received successful treatment it has been an astonishing journey to this point. Indeed, it has culminated in him striking the crucial goal to help his country become the first host nation to lift this trophy since Egypt in 2006.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH SIMON ADINGRA (IVORY COAST)

The provider for both of Ivory Coasts goals, Adingra produced another influential performance for his nation when it mattered most.

No player created more chances (six) or had more touches in the opposition box than the Elephants winger (eight). Adingra also contested the most duels (18 ) and completed more successful dribbles (five) than any other player, one of which resulting in the delicious ball he delivered for Haller to tuck away.

Paul Pogbas football career all but over as Juventus superstar handed 4-year ban after failed doping test

Juventus superstar Paul Pogba has been handed a four-year doping ban. Pogbas positive test was announced in September.

Juventus superstar Paul Pogba has been reportedly handed a four-year suspension from football on Thursday. The former Manchester United midfielder was provisionally suspended in September for testing positive for testosterone. Italy's sports prosecutors had requested a 4-year ban for France's World Cup winner over the doping allegations against the playmaker. Pogba was suspended in September after Juventus recorded a 3-0 win over Udinese in the Italian Serie A opener.

    Juventus' French midfielder Paul Pogba

Pogba's anti-doping hearing was shifted from January 18 to an unspecified date, and Italy's anti-doping tribunal also accepted the demands from the French midfielder's lawyers. Earlier, Pogba's representatives refused to comment about the anti-doping hearing. Following the hearing at the NADO tribunal in Rome, Pogba was already tipped to face a lengthy ban from football. In December, anti-doping prosecutors sought a maximum 4-year ban for the Juventus midfielder.

    Did you know?
Pogba could have reduced his requested ban in half if the former Manchester United star demonstrated that he did not intentionally dope. The Juventus playmaker would have only been suspended for a few months if he had been successful in proving that the banned substance was taken out of competition. According to news agency AFP, Pogba's camp asserted that the testosterone came from a food supplement prescribed by a doctor the Frenchman consulted in the United States. Pogba can appeal against the decision at the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Pogbas football career all but over

The four-year ban for Juventus star Pogba could end the career of the FIFA World Cup winner. The 30-year-old scored for Kylian Mbappe-starrer France in the 4-2 win over Luka Modric's Croatia in the final of the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia. Pogba has won 178 caps for Juventus from 2012-16. Bothered by injuries ever since the Frenchman re-joined Juventus from Manchester United, Pogba missed the 2022 World Cup due to a knee injury. Pogba played two matches for Juventus this season. In the previous season, Pogba only appeared for six Serie A games for Bianconeri.
