ORMAKALUDE BHRAMANAPADHAM – Nambi Narayanan with Prajesh Sen
For me the ISRO spy case has always been like the JFK assassination. The deeper you go, far reaches the outcome. Many seemingly unrelated puzzle-pieces conjoin together to complete a picture that will astound you for the sheer brilliance of planning that went behind it. The difference is that, in one, the victim outlived the plot to tell the tale while the similarity is that, in both, the bloody CIA were involved. Co-written by a movie director, the book follows a movie narrative. It starts off with Nambi being taken from his home for questioning by Vanjiyoor station police officers in November 1994. The book then moves on to (flashbacks) the interrogation & torture faced by him with subsequent chapters having him think about his former life in the confines of the Latex guesthouse in Poojappura. A mechanical engineer who finds an ISRO vacancy in a piece of newspaper that covered household items from local grocery. The Thumba years. Sarabhai. Interest in cryogenic engines. The hardships our batch of 53 cryogenic research scientists faced in Vernon, France. Nambi being elevated to cryogenic director. Till then things were good. Then comes the successful testing of our own ‘made in India’ VIKAS (short for VIKram A Sarabhai) cryogenic engine with French facilities which leads to ISRO deciding to build a wholly indigenous one... and the game begins.
The main charge against Nambi & the 5 other accused is that they stole cryogenic drawings & documents from ISRO & sold them to Pakistan for crores & crores of rupees. First of all, ISRO has never lodged a complaint about such a theft having taken place. Secondly, in 1994 USA, Russia & France were the only countries to have fully developed cryogenic technology. ISRO itself being in developing stages, then what is there that they could have stolen & sold? Thirdly, cryogenic technology is not something you learn from documents & drawings. It needs thousands of man-hours of research. When ISRO decided to build one of their own, they handed out the documents & drawings to potential builders to submit tenders with 2000 rupees service charge which means, the documents & drawings were available for 2000 rupees then why the need for crores & crores of rupees. Fourthly, if at all these guys did sell to Pakistan in 1994, its now two decades, why is, leave cryogenic technology, why is rocket science not yet developed in Pakistan. This is one side of the puzzle. On the other side is the power squabbles in ISRO. The ongoing tiff between supporters of solid propellants versus those of liquid. Yet again on another side is Mariam Rasheeda, the Mali spy. It all started with her wanting to extend her leave for which she takes her passport to Kerala Police. Now, when did spies ever start to flash their own passports? Then there is the AK Anthony orchestrated political plot to suffocate Raman Shrivastava which would strangle Karunakaran & the ruling cabinet (which did finally succeed too). There is Vanchiyoor constable Vijayan who tried to take advantage of Mariam, failing which he registers a case against her. There is DGP Madhusudhan who is forced by IB Director MK Dhar to implicate charges, the same IB guy who, nearing retirement & bungled with the Maulvi arrest wants to sign off by nabbing bigger fishes. IB, who does not have authority to question people did so with Nambi & it was never mentioned in court. Then ofcourse, it all leads back to Ratan Sehgal, the former IB Joint Director who worked as a CIA spy having fallen into the honey-trap of a blonde CIA female agent. Sleaze, sleaze everywhere... someone should fucking definitely make this book into a movie!
