EKM - Padma Screen 2 Mini (Mini ennulladhu prathyekam sradhickanam aarum kaanaadhe pokarudhu...)
Status: HF
Saw Salim Ahamed's movie after Adaaminte Makan Abu. This time his combination with an actor like Mammootty had evoked good expectations among the lovers of meaningful cinema. The film is successfull in living up to those expectation in terms of storyline, script, direction and acting.
This is the story of a person who loves his small grocery store more than anything else in the world. He has lot of sentiments associated with that shop starting from his childhood memories to the memories of his father his hero. When I say his father his hero, it is not in terms of new generation kids.
The first half of the story revolved around showing the failed family life of Kunjananthan and his attachment to his shop. 1st half is lively with several one liners which evokes good laughter among audience. The one liners between Kanjananthan and his wife are very good and is very close to the several couples of present day. The 1st half goes on with light meaningful and close to life comedy with a serious turn towards the interval. The chemistry between Kunjananthan and his wife has worked out very well in spite of the age difference between the actors. Mam the actor rocks in the first half with his one liners and @ the same time showing his furstrations on his family life.
The second half turns serious with the fight of Kunjananthan to save his shop which is his life. The film portrays very well the helplessness of people like Kunjanathan when their shops or homes are taken by Govt for various projects. When we all make noise about the need of new roads and other projects, none of us see the pain some people has to go through during this process. The film portrays well the other side also - necessity of such developments and how it could be an opportunity for people. In the 2nd half we could see Mam the class actor again in full form but on contrary to 1st half this time emoting serious situations to perfection. His fight to save the shop, his realization of some of his selfishness etc etc has been brought live to the screen with a classic touch.
All in all it is a realistic and meaningful movie going through a simple story and at the same time touching upon some relevant topics for the current society.
Positives
Of course Mam's performance. Currently in Mollywood there is one and only Mammootty who can bring this character to such perfection in all sense - Expressions, Dialogue delivery and modulation etc etc.
Good Script and direction. Salim Ahmed is definitely not a one film wonder.
Good Photography and sound
A socially relevant theme told in a realistic way
Good performance from the heroine
Negatives
Lagging @ parts during 2nd half. Not too bad and expected in these type of movies.
Crowd Response
Very good laughters in the 1st half with some good claps for some one liners. 2nd half the audience was rather quiet with youngsters showing restlessness in the pace of the movie.
Rating - 4.5 / 5 - An outstanding movie with some outstanding performances.
Final Word - Go for it if you are a lover of realistic Mam movies like Kaazhcha, Kaiyoppu, Ore Kadal etc. Stay away if you are looking for full fledged entertainer.
Vaalkashanam - Renjith chadhichenkilum Salim Ahamed rakshichu.
