By the time, Nanayam was released , Mammootty had become the biggest star in Malayalam cinema. Nanayam was released in October or November 1983. By the time, Mammootty was already huge with solo blockbusters like Aa Raathri, Sandhyakku Virinjha Poovu, Megahits like Pin Nilavu. Koodevide released just before Nanayam(if my memory is right). Koodevide gave another dimension to Mammootty not only as a star but as potentially a great actor in the making.

But what is fundamental is that when I.V.Sasi cast Mammootty as the hero in Thrishna way back in 1981(!!), he was literally no one in Malayalam cinema. It was Mammootty's first solo hero character. When Sasi cast him in Ahimsa, Ee Naadu, Sindhoora Sandhyakku Mounam, Innallenkil naale in good supporting roles, he was still just a supporting actor only. But by the time Sasi joined hands with Mammootty in Nanayam and Iniyenkilum, he had become the biggest star of Malayalam cinema.
Then came 1984.....March 1984.....Akshranghal.....rest as they say is history.....

there r guys who still believe that Mammukka become a star after New Delhi! most valuable hero from 1983-86..with 30+ movies as hero every year! many hits and super hits..all before new delhi.. Yathra-nirakkoot time (1985), there was not even a worthy competitor..
