Manchester United are exploring whether they can sign either of the German internationals Toni Kroos or Marco Reus as David Moyes steps up his revamp of the club’s failing squad.
But Moyes does not want his overhaul to end there and he attended Borussia Monchengladbach’s home game against Kroos’s Bayern Munich on Friday evening. The United manager was escorted by Sascha Breese, who works for Sportstotal, headed by the agent Volker Struth.
The company represents both Kroos and Reus and sources have confirmed to Telegraph Sport that Moyes has registered United’s interest in both of the German internationals. Neither player is likely to be available this month, but United hope that one of Kroos or Reus can join this summer.
The club have also shown interest in Schalke’s Julian Draxler, but have ultimately decided that they are well-stocked in Draxler’s position.
The expectation is that the highly-rated left-sided attacker will join Arsenal, possibly even this week, for £37.8 million if his buy-out clause is met. Arsenal are in talks and hope to sign Draxler for a lower figure.
Bayern have so far failed to agree a new deal with Kroos, an elegant 24-year-old midfielder, who has less than 18 months left on his current deal. Unless he signs a new contract, he is likely to be sold in the summer.
Reus, also 24, has a £30 million release clause in his contract at Borussia Dortmund although it is only active in the summer of 2015.
United also admire Southampton’s Luke Shaw but are unlikely to bid for the left back this month unless he is made available. A move in the summer, when they will be rivalled by a host of Premier League clubs, is more likely.
Rooney’s new deal could be agreed sooner, with United having started talks with his representatives over a deal which would make him the highest-paid player in the league and keep him at Old Trafford until 2018.
The striker had previously indicated he had wanted to leave and join Chelsea but talks are now under way after Rooney indicated he would sign. He will be encouraged by United’s positive moves this month.
