Chelsea could take home fake trophy
The fact that Manchester United and Chelsea are tied at the top the English Premier League, each with 84 points and one game left — both next Sunday — has caused the league to take action.
Ever since Chelsea beat Newcastle United 2-0 on Monday, the only thing separating the two teams is goal differential. Manchester United is +56 in goals for/goals against while Chelsea is only +37. But the differential tally would only be applied should both teams win (or lose), so the league has planned for what happens if one team wins, and the other does not.
Because the Premier League trophy cannot be in Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea is playing Bolton, and at the JJB Stadium, where Manchester United faces Wigan Athletic, the league has decided to get a replica of the trophy made. The replica will go to Stamford Bridge in the event that Chelsea should win the title, while the real trophy will be at the JJB Stadium.
"The practical difficulties of the title race going into the final day of the season means that the Barclays Premier League trophy will be on standby at both the JJB Stadium and Stamford Bridge," a Premier League spokesman told The Guardian.
The trophy isn't the only problem the league faces with both teams being so close — it also had to figure out how medals for the players would be distributed. A decision was made to make a duplicate set of medals so that they can be on standby at both stadiums.
This is the first time in nearly 10 years that the winner of the title has not been known going into the final game of the season. In 1999, it was Manchester United and Aresenal. Manchester United nabbed the title by one point that year, and is the favourite to win again this year — though not by much.
