Trigeminal Neuralgia In Spotlight After Khan's Diagnosis
Salman Khan, 45, will seek treatment for trigeminal neuralgia, a disorder caused by pressure from a blood vessel on the trigeminal nerve in the head, causing electric-shock-like stabbing pain.
Doctors diagnosed Khan, the bad-boy star of last year's blockbuster Bollywood film "Dabangg," with an aneurysm, a swelling of blood vessels in the brain. His symptoms began four years ago and he has been prescribed medication to combat them, according to an article in The Hindustan Times.
"The pain is a bit too much now. So I'm going to the U.S. to get it fixed," he was quoted by AFP as writing in the English-language newspaper. "Now, we're getting down to something we should have done a long time ago -- taking care of it. That has a chance of bleeding and could be fatal. But they're just scaring me," he added.
Trigeminal neuralgia is known as tic douloureux and the "suicide disease," since it makes everyday tasks like eating and brushing one's teeth excruciating. Khan didn't say which surgical procedure for trigeminal neuralgia he will seek. One is rhizotomy, which destroys certain nerve fibers.
Due to the surgery, Khan will miss the debut of his new film "Bodyguard," to be released Aug. 31.
