Premam Review
29/5/15 @PVR
Just as the flowers that spurt across the land and herald the arrival of the Spring, Director Alphonse Puthren’s new movie ‘Premam’ is as fresh and romantic or more. Since 2011, there have been many movies that have reinforced change in Malayalam Cinema but this writer would like to call ‘Premam’ as the most decisive of all of those. That is not an overkill because make no mistakes, ‘Premam’ leaves an indelible mark on the canvass of Malayalam Cinema. Some may choose to ignore it or few others may laugh it off, but the thunderous raptures in the cinema halls and the warmth that the movie spreads is sheer substantiation that ‘Premam’ has changed the standards of movie making in Malayalam.Yes, that’s from a hard core admirer of this effort. Hats Off!
‘Premam’ deals with 3 romances in a person’s life which we have seen in movies like ‘Autograph’ but its strength lies in the brilliant conception and making. The title which perhaps values the most is ‘Conceived By’ and never has it been more evident than in this movie. Nivin delivers a knock out performance as 'George David'. Till now if his roles where shades of repeating himself, ‘Premam’ grows beyond and almost comes off age during the second college episode. Sai Pallavi is a revelation as 'Malar'. She in a way represents the movie in herself – Real and Fresh. Anupama and Madonna do their limited parts alright. The casting is brilliantly done or at least its covered up well in the making.
The movie belongs to Alphonse Puthren. There has not been a movie in recent times which has broken so much grounds in making, editing and conception. The realism works and how. The effort taken in making the movie is staggering and its evident in the small nuances and relentless editing. Music is different and suits the movie. Songs are impromptu and the Sequences overlapping. It all works well.
Perhaps the simplicity of the theme and the length may be the slight disappointments but it never bothers. If ‘Bangalore Days’ was about bringing Bollywood style of making to Malayalam with big star cast and style, ‘Premam’ takes the raw camaraderie, earthiness and compulsive wooing as seen in some Tamil movies and blends it to a Kerala life in such a way that it takes us to a unseen plain altogether.
Lastly, till now the best made movie of the year, the best edited movie of the year, the best lead performance and the best song (Malare by Vijay Yesudas) and more all combine to make ‘Premam’ a landmark in itself. The thousands of young people that this movie will inspire to create better future for Malayalam cinema would be its real asset. ‘Premam’ is the magic of realism!
Rating – 3.5/5
Verdict - A Landmark
Really?..Individual pieces may stand out..but there were cliches in the movie that bothered me....I hated the idea of turning alphonse's character into a jerk...and even the final confrontation was a failure in its attemty at some dark humor..I didnt like the way .george-malar story ends....the angle seemed contrived....the 'Contra' Song was terribly misplaced....the romance in last track had more scope to b developed...does the fringe characters ..like the guy who visiits the cafe..add much to story..?...I liked change brought in color tone, the edits, the sync sound, the music..but truth is screenplay was messy and film lacked substance and more importantly solid drama.....
Thanks Critic bhai
I agree about the lagging portions especilly after Malar is gone. The opening scene in the 3rd story to the booze scene and contra song. The movie starts to fall during those portions and yes the third love story was cliched up fast but then that is expected. The Celine angle from past kept that alive for me and also the comedy from Jojo (character name) and old enemy turned friend.
I see where you are going as in screenplay being simple and devoid of drama but for an realistic entertainer, it seemed good enough. May be try a repeat watch (suggesting since i know your taste). To be really frank, I liked it more when i watched a second time.
Third episode avmpolekum george have had enough of wooing and just wanted to get hitched to the girl he liked .
