Rumour has it that Ashutosh Gowariker and Sajid Khan had some sort of a face-off during the Star Screen Awards.
Sajid, in his trademark fashion, was taking digs at anyone and everyone and Ashutosh and his lengthy films happened to be the butt of his jokes.
A friend who was at the show told me that Ashu had to step on to the stage one time too many to receive awards on behalf of his technicians.
At one point Sajid joked that Ashu was not the one to miss any opportunity to be on stage and must've told his team to stay at home so he could collect the awards himself. Ashu only smiled at that time.
But when he came to accept the Best Director's trophy, Ashu had his say. Sounding rather acidic when he told the audience he wasn't expecting to get any trophy going by the evening was progressing.
Ashu then went on to express displeasure at Sajid taking digs at everyone around him.
Sajid apparently interrupted him to which Ashu shot back saying, "Shut up!"
A visibly shaken Sajid Khan tried to pacify Ashutosh telling him that it was all being done for the television and it wasn't personal.
But Ashu was not to be pacified and suggested that the humour was not in good taste and he shouldn't demean his colleagues.
Now, I am aware that Sajid and Ashutosh used to be quite close and Sajid had even called up Ashu to congratulate him after watching Swades.
The argument continued as Sajid tried to remind Ashu that they were friends, to which Ashu agreed. "Friends don't tell each other to shut up!" Sajid reportedly told Ashu.
But the Jodhaa director was in no mood to stop. He reprimanded Sajid for interrupting award winners during their speech. After this, he promptly thanked everyone present and walked off the stage.
Soon after Farah Khan, who was the co-anchor for the evening, broached the topic again and supported her brother Sajid.
Next up, Amar Singh, who had come with Jaya Bachchan to present the Best Actress award, decided to make the most of the situation and applauded Ashutosh for 'taking up an issue'.
Clearly the man was reminded of the time when Shah Rukh Khan took a dig at him during another awards function a few years ago.
Now all this has got me thinking whether the whole episode was a publicity stunt. Guess we'll just have to wait and watch!
