Dhoni to run CSK for two years?
By Vijay Tagore, Bangalore Mirror Bureau | Jul 16, 2015, 04.00 AM IST
These are early days yet, but the contours of life after Chennai Super Kings is palpable. Somewhere in the Indian cricket circle, the option of handing Mahendra Singh Dhoni the reigns of the Chennai team is being discussed. It is being seen as a viable alternative.
The India skipper is not new to sports business; he is a known entrepreneur in the sports market. He partly owns a hockey team (Ranchi) in the Hockey India League and he is also involved in the Indian Soccer League (ISL) having come on board the Chennaiyin FC management. In a way, running an IPL team should not be all that difficult for him.
It is being said that by taking over the Chennai team, Dhoni will save himself from representing another IPL team, a proposition that was unthinkable — just like Sachin Tendulkar representing another team other than Mumbai was an impossibility — till the Justice Lodha Committee suspended Chennai Super Kings.
The move, it is understood, is still in a nascent stage as it has been only 24 hours since the committee delivered its verdict, but the people who matter already have thought of such a move. It is being said that Dhoni can be asked to run the team in Ranchi if not in Chennai. Anyway, Chennai Super Kings have played more home games in the India skipper's hometown rather than in his adopted city in the recent times.
The move is likely to get the thumbs-up from the CSK management as it would protect its fan base as Dhoni and Chennai are synonymous when it comes to the IPL. The arrangement can be for the two years when CSK will be under suspension. "We will encourage any move that can protect our fans," a CSK official said. "But first we will explore our legal options. If the appeal fails we will look at alternatives." The CSK strategy will take shape once N Srinivasan returns from London on Saturday.
Dhoni could not be immediately reached for comment, but it is understood that his manager Arun Pandey's company Rhiti Sports can be involved in the project. Pandey did not respond to messages.
Meanwhile, sources say the Adani Group's involvement in a future arrangement cannot be ruled out. Rajasthan Royals have made the city their base and with them gone, there is a chance that the alternative team can also be from Gujarat. It, of course, needs no mention why.
HUDDLE IN KOLKATA
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials were still unaware of any such proposal, but it is understood that they may not be averse to such an arrangement. At the time of writing this, Rajeev Shukla, the chairman of Indian Premier League (IPL), was huddled in a meeting with BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya in Kolkata. It was not difficult to guess, though, what the discussion was.
