Mollywood art director faces union ban
A fresh row has broken out in Mollywood with veteran art director, Salu K. George being banned by the directors’ union, FEFKA, for allegedly not cooperating with the makers of the Dileep starrer, Mr Marumakan.
“Mr Marumakan directed by Sandhya Mohan has been delayed because the art director has refused to cooperate with them for months. As the director and producer of the film lodged several complaints against Salu, the union intervened and asked him to complete the project.
"But, he refused and so we issued him a show cause notice. When he didn’t respond to this as well, we had no choice but to ban him,” said general secretary of the directors’ union, Jose Thomas, warning that no director in the union would now be ready to work with Salu.
Asked about reports that Salu was banned because he had worked on Vinayan’s yet-to-be released film, Drakula, Mr George said the matter with Vinayan was a closed chapter as far as the union was concerned.
When contacted, Salu maintained he had no clue why he had been banned. “A show-cause notice was sent to my friends, but I haven’t received the notice yet,” he claimed, denying that he had refused to cooperate with the making of Mr Marumakan.
“This a totally baseless charge. Nothing of the sort happened,” he said, adding that the ban could have something to do with his stint with the makers of Drakula. “I was not told not to cooperate with Vinayan’s film. The ban is uncalled for,” he said.
Aymanam Sajan, a production controller, felt that as Salu’s expertise was vital for a horror film like Drakula, he could not refuse to be a part of it.

Jaya gesture to Jagathy Sreekumar
Ailing actor Jagathy Sreekumar seems to be forgotten by the Kerala government and the AMMA alike. But, across the border, Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa is so concerned over his speedy recovery that she wants a daily report on his recuperation.
Jayalalithaa has asked Vellore district collector Ajay Yadav to report to her daily on the health condition of the actor, recovering from a road accident at the Vellore Christian Medical College (CMC). She and Jagathy had acted in two Tamil films together.
The doctors at the CMC have removed the nasal tube on Wednesday which was on him since he had met with the accident at Panambra in Malappuram district on March 10.
Jagathy’s son-in-law Shawn George told Deccan Chronicle that he was showing tremendous improvement. “If this continues, the chances of discharging him from the hospital by September are high,” George said.
Jagathy has been undergoing treatment at the CMC Hospital since April 10. According to Edavela Babu, secretary of AMMA, Jagathy recognized Kalabhavan Mani unlike the rest of the visitors who had called on him recently. When asked why AMMA has so far not helped Jagathy in meeting the huge medical bills, Babu said his family members had not asked for any help.
“AMMA is ready to help Jagathy by raising money individually from actors and the production staff and can even conduct a fund-raising event. Also, I keep getting a minimum of 20 e-mails from his fans asking whether they can help him or not”, Babu told DC.
However, veteran actor Thilakan was emotional when Jagathy’s topic was raised. He said that Jagathy “is an asset of the state”.
“I feel the government should meet all his medical expenses. Minister Ganesh Kumar has announced plans to launch a film directorate. When we have Chalachitra Academy and KSFDC, why should the government have a film directorate too? The government should rather utilise such funds for Jagathy’s treatment,” said Thilakan.
However, Ganesh Kumar said if the family members requested for financial aid, the cabinet would consider the matter. “Fortunately, the family can take care of the bills. There are more deserving actors, and AMMA can help them,” he said.
The government had shifted Mr. Jagathy by providing air ambulance from MIMS Hospital in Calicut to Vellore CMC Hospital which had come to almost Rs 15 lakhs.
