The mystery of India's low coronavirus death rate
11 Oct 2020
- Under-counting -
India already does not count all deaths. The problem is more acute in rural areas where 70 percent of the population live. Many rural deaths are not recorded unless the person has been in a hospital.
This has been accentuated during the coronavirus. In many cities, tallies given by city governments and at cemeteries and crematoria do not match. Activists accuse some states of deliberately blaming other conditions for Covid-19 deaths.
"Our poor routine death surveillance system... misses many deaths in the first place," Bangalore-based community medicine expert Hemant Shewade told AFP. He reckons that only one in five deaths is recorded with a cause.
Shewade, who has been analysing India's official toll data, said many suspected Covid-19 deaths were not being recorded.
Government-conducted serological surveys -- which test blood for antibodies to estimate how many have fought off the virus -- indicate that 10 times the official number of people may have already been infected, meaning many deaths could have gone unreported, he added.
Meanwhile in some cases, the coronavirus may not be listed as the cause of death for patients with other medical conditions.
I am telling everything based on govt official data ..you dont trust..then you point one or two incident in some media report...all international and national media say kerala is worst effected now..yoy dont want to trust that either...i dont want any more stupid aguements...
Infection going uncontrolled in kerala..mkerala govt come up with more relaxation...alll tourism open next day...any body from ouside kerala can come...no quaratine needed...no real plan or any thing from kerala....kerala is the only area in world who do like this when cases still skyrocketting...then blame every body else...pathetic...such a.senseless govt....failed 100 % in covid...
i have seen you many times refuting the official data given by kerala government. then how can you say you are telling everything based on government official data. for the sake of argument, let us suppose you are believing in government data. the fact still remains, whether it be kerala government or any government, the data is what the government wants the public to know. whereas i am telling everything based on newspaper reports and articles who are criticising the governments of maharashtra, tamil nadu, gujarat, telangana, haryana and uttar pradesh for lots of lapses in their covid treatment among which falls undercounting of covid deaths and non-reporting of comorbid deaths too. so, just because you .spread lies and don't have proof to back your claims, that does not make my arguments stupid.
Govt should do this kind of things when cases coming down or ghings in full control like other part of india or world...not when jnfections are skyrocketting and health system overwhelmjng with icu and ventlators are alll getting fill...beyond doubt most iresponsible and stupid action...no wonder kerala is falling into a helll....
