This movie had more meat to it than Lucifer which only dealt with local family politics and media circus.
This movie has taken a bold political stand which is against Communalism in General. something you don't expect in a large scale Mass Pot Boiler.
The First half of the movie felt a bit stretched with too much visual detailing. (Indrajith meeting KA Episode could have trimmed to one fourth.)
Second Half of the Movie was very sold and felt quite Racy and crisp.
Nevertheless I found no problem in connecting with either the film or characters at any stage. which is a Big Plus.
The USP of this movie is its Politics. The Enjoyment of the movie is largely depends upon the the political standpoint of the Viewer. (You either hate it or love it). Its as simple as that.
The Scenes involving Priyadarshini Ramdas emerging as a leader was pure Goosebumps stuff for me.For me, that was far more powerful and Punchy than that those of similar kind in Lucifer. I just enjoyed that Part.
The movie is well made with right rhythm and Beats. Prithviraj deserves credit in the portrayal of every episode with conviction, whether its the dark world of Khureshi Abram or Traumatic childhood of the Saeed or the political scenarios in the state.
However, I didnt observe any brilliance from the part of the Director in the film. Like what you call the Stamp of a Director. Something you find in the movies of Joshy, Priyadarshan or Amal Neerad. I Strongly believe they could have created more impact with less than half of the budget at their Prime. For me the 200- crore Budget is a bit hard to digest. Theres no justification for a location like London for a simple metro scenes spanning only a few seconds in this age where you can create/recreate anything with VFX with conviction.
The climax felt Nice.
And I am really thrilled to see Mohanlal's past unveiling through that actor. I strongly believe he is the best and only choice in Mollywood to do adrenaline rushing action scenes with sheer flexibility.
I really hope Prithvi collaborate with some world class action choreographers in the next instalment, rather than spending money on location and helicopters.
About Politics in the movie.
I love Kalapani.
Now, I Love Empuran.
Both both movies are assymetrical from Political Standpoint.
Yet, I love them because of the new Film Aesthetics they bring to the Table. At the End of the Day, a film is a work of Fiction. It can never be a History book. Its disturbing to see a section of people claiming t be once loyal - Mohanlal Fans showering abuses on a man who entertained you for four Decades. At the and of the day both Mammootty and Mohanlal are Professional Actors. You simply can't put them in boxes and dictates terms on their film subjects. Let them explore new waters and territories.
Political Movies are Hard hitting in general . Thats what makes them spicy and attractive. Murali Gopi is amazingly good at hitting with punch. Renji Panikkar is fortunate to live in an era of political tolerance where he had the liberty to criticize and even mock at any institution in the likes of the left/right/media/CM/Prime Mnister etc.
Personally, I really overwhelmed by the Box office Numbers this movie is creating and feel very happy for Lalettan who keeps trying with Big Projects from the 90s itself inspite of many failures. At last we have a film that is creating huge ripples all over the world. Hats off to this man for quashing the boundaries of Mollywood and creating new Benchmarks for us.
Regarding the Upcoming Cuts.
This movie has a strong political undertone that can never be submerged even if you cut away two thirds of the film.
However the filmmakers have now a golden opportunity to trim the movie now that would help some junk fat out of the movie as a whole that would make this movie crisp and Racy. I hope they seek the creative possibilities of these "voluntary modification".
Why this movie Works?
This is a well marketed Movie. Prithviraj just Nailed. This is where Prithviraj has no match among current Mollywood film Makers. There are people who can make better products with their craftsmanship. But Prithvi has superior cinematic Intelligence regarding what what will work and what will not. Its that conviction that drives his projects forward. I admire him more as visionery than as a director.
