Dulquer Salmaan is ecstatic about winning his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor
Incessant phone calls later, it is a relief to hear Dulquer Salmaan’s deep voice come across loud and clear over the line. “Ecstatic!” says the young actor about his award-winning act in Charlie, which has swept the Kerala State Film Awards for 2015. While there were many contenders for the best actor award, Dulquer was the dark horse that breasted the tape at the last minute with his memorable role in Martin Prakkat’s film. It’s a first for the actor, who has also made in a mark in Tamil.
“I never expected it. It is such a pleasant surprise. It is yet to sink in,” says Dulquer, the elevation evident in his voice. “The sense of accomplishment is all the more because the film has also won awards for the director and the actress as well. So the team as a whole is celebrating,” says Dulquer. He plays the lead role in the film, which completely steers away from the formulaic format of commercial films and yet is a blockbuster that was still running in theatres a week ago. Blending elements of fiction and fantasy, the movie teases the viewers with its joyous and sparkling treatment of the story and the theme. Dulquer plays a modern-day gypsy who sees joy all around him and tries to make others see and feel that optimism.
And what did his father, Mammootty, have to say about his son’s first award? “Super proud! Uppa is emotional and so very happy. He advised me not to think too much about it but to get on with my work,” says Dulquer. Incidentally, Mammootty, a winner of the award several times over, was in the contention this year also for his sterling performance in Pathemari. Saying that it is one of the best films that he watched last year, Dulquer adds: “It is such a superb movie, one that narrates the story of Kerala.”
Reverting to his Charlie, Dulquer says that the team was sure about their characters as Martin was clear about his movie and the story. He told them to go with the script and breathe life into their characters life.
Dulquer has an impressive line-up of films for 2016. First up for release is Sameer Thahir’s Kali. Then, there are Rajeev Ravi’s Kammatti Paadam, Pratap Pothen’s Love in Anjengo and Amal Neerad’s new flick.
Since his debut in 2012, he has worked with some of the best directors in Malayalam and also with Mani Ratnam in Tamil. Last year, he was in the running for the award for his performance in Ranjith’sNjaan. The youngster asserts that the award does not make him worry about the burden of expectations. “I will continue to be true to myself and do my best in all my films,” he adds.
