In the past, one may remember that Avatar and Enthiran's CG work were done at the Stan Winston Studios. The movie which is quietly progressing without much talk has now shot up the expectations in the cine circles. Nanban was his first remake in a career spanning 18 years. Shankar is the only director in Kollywood whose movie has grossed over Rs 100 crore. With 11 films to his credit and nearly a 100 per cent hit, the director gets talking to us about Nanban and more.
What were the challenges you faced with remaking 3 idiots in Tamil ?
*Casting was very crucial to Nanban and it was a major challenge for me in this film. Another challenge was to stay true to the original script and retain the soul of the movie. I didn¡¯t want anything to be lost in the conversion of the film from Hindi to Tamil. I had to retain the emotions. Shankar ¨C the director ¡ª took a backseat and I became a medium to help remake this movie.
Working with Vijay¡*
*When I got the offer to direct this film, it was with Vijay in the lead. I was sure he could pull off Aamir¡¯s role and that¡¯s why I signed on the film. Everyone liked Nanban more because Vijay has done something different from his usual roles.
Some critics felt as it was a remake, you didn¡¯t have much to do¡*
*I did this movie as an audience member though I enjoyed it as a director. When I was shooting for Endhiran, we were waiting for permission for a particular shot on the Pune highway. Since the shoot got cancelled for the day, I was very upset. I decided to head off to a movie to divert my mind. 3 idiots had just released then. For the mood I was in, I wanted to seen an action film but I ended up watching a comedy. My mind was not on the film but I saw the audience continuously laughing. I got involved in the film and I felt so good at the end of it. It was a wonderful feeling and I thought our Tamil audience must also experience this. However, Nanban is not a literal translation of 3 idiots. The movie had to be fresh and yet retain its soul. I wanted to bring it as close as possible to the Tamil audience by making it earthy and simple. A lot of people told me that they forgot the original while watching this film. I was happy to hear that.
Aska Laska... and the belly dance
Harris Jayaraj said that the audience would expect more songs from us since Vijay and Ileana were in the film and he was doing the music for a ¡®Shankar film¡¯. I was very clear that we shouldn¡¯t force-fit any songs. The songs gave me scope to add something interesting. Aska Laska... was a subtle spoof of songs featured in Tamil films. As for the belly dance song, I had the concept in mind since the time I shot for Jeans in Turkey.

Working on a remake¡*
*I never expected to ever do a remake. This was a new experience, unexpected, but I won¡¯t do another remake. Not even a remake of my own film!
What happened to your production house?
*Several of my films didn¡¯t do well and I lost a lot of money. I burnt my hands and legs (laughs). Now, I¡¯m slowly getting relieved of all my ¡®burns¡¯. I plan to still produce movies, but considering I have made a lot of costly mistakes, my strategy will be different. I¡¯m looking for a good script.
Bollywood dreams
*I am open to doing to Hindi films. In fact, I was supposed to work with Shah Rukh. Everything just needs to fall into place. It depends on what I do next.
What are you working on next? Buzz is that Ajith, Vikram or Chiranjeevi have been signed on¡*?
*No one has been signed on yet. There are several concepts in mind. My next will be an original script and I should finalize it by March. As of now, I am off on holiday.
Rumour that you are the highest paid filmmaker in India¡*
*I don¡¯t know. I don¡¯t think that¡¯s a big credit. If people say I am the most reliable director in India, I¡¯d be happy (laughs). I¡¯d like to be known as a director who knows how to satisfy the audience.

The news of the Prabhu Deva- Nayanthara split had come as a shock, but what is intriguing is that nobody really knows what went wrong between the two.
It is not the first time there is speculation about their relationship hitting a rough patch.
But what lends credence to the rumours this time is that Nayanthara went ahead and signed a Telugu film with Nagarajuna, just when media was waiting for the announcement of their wedding date!
Everyone in the industry was aware that Prabhu Deva was not keen on Nayan doing films since they were dating and had a live-in relationship.
Ravi Teja promises Nayanthara a film?
Even after media reported about their split, the couple has not denied the reports in the media and is keeping mum about their "marriage" plans!
Says a source close to Prabhu Deva: "They have known each other for over three years now and their differences seem to be increasing over time”.
Both Nayan and Prabhu have been maintaining a low profile but the buzz doing K-Town rounds is that the two don't seem interested in each other.
Some regional dailies reported that it is Prabhu Deva's bonding and closeness with Engeyum Kathal heroine Hansika that created the split!
Hansika, however, was quick to tweet: “Well I choose to be dignified and keep quiet about the rumours that r going around about me n Prabhu Deva (who's a Brother to me ). This story has NO spice, so please drop it there. Brother ‘n’ Sister can be NEVER be linked up ! Humble N Respect please”!
Meanwhile, Tollywood buzz is that an upbeat Nayanthara attended Ravi Teja's birthday party in Hyderabad last week and that she will be signing a film soon with the actor.
There are also unconfirmed reports that she is the front runner to be Ajit's heroine in the Vishnuvardhan directed film produced by AM Ratnam.

Is Aravind Swamy planning a comeback in Kollywood?
The buzz is that his mentor and guru Mani Ratnam is giving him a new lease of life in his new film.
Aravind Swamy referred to as the “most handsome man ever to debut in Kollywood” is now all set to return in a character role. Swamy, as per the grapevine is going to play heroine Samantha’s father in the film which was initially titled Pookadai.
Mani Ratnam’s love story set against a coastal village has been creating a lot of hype even before the shoot on the film started. Gautham, Karthik’s son is debuting opposite Samantha in the film which has Rajiv Menon as cinematographer and has music by AR Rahman.
Mani has also roped in ‘Action King’ Arjun to play an important role which has shades of grey along with Pasupathy and Lakshmi Manchu.
The addition of Aravind Swamy in the cast is a major plus, as the actor was refusing to make a comeback.
February film fiesta in K'wood

The month of February 2012, has 29 days but nearly 20 Tamil films are waiting to get a theatrical release!
The floodgates has been opened after Tamil Film Producers Council came out with a new rule that big star movies can only release during five days in a year.
So two films which had big stars and were getting ready for release in February, Dhanush’s 3 and Karthi’s Saguni have now been postponed to April 13,Tamil New Year day.
Now, February will see only release of small films, and everybody wants to get their film released. They feel TFPC decision is a boon to small Tamil films which were finding it difficult to get a theatrical release due to large number of biggies.
The films which have announced a February release are – Marina, Sengattu Bhumiyile, Sinam, Oru Mazhai Nangu Saral, Aravan, Dhoni, Kadhalil SodhappuvathuEppadi, Muppozhudhum Un Karpanaigal ,Ambuli 3D, Sooriyanagaram, Udumban, Attakathi,Mayilu, Kazhagu, Padam Pathu Kathai Sollu, Oru Nadigayan VakkuMoolam, Kondaan Kodathaan, Virudhanagar Sandhippu, Vazhakku Enn 18/19 etc, etc!
Will all these films which have announced a February release, get the screens? We will have to wait and watch as there are only four Fridays this month and too many films for release.
