It’s three cheers for 3 Idiots, Aamir on opening day
25 Dec 2009, 2354 hrs IST, Meenakshi Verma Ambwani, ET Bureau
NEW DELHI: Three Idiots is set to outwit the other big stars at the box office on Friday. Going by the movie’s performance at cinema halls, the
producer and distributors expect to close Friday with Rs 20-crore gross revenue. In comparison, other hits like Love Aaj Kal and Kambakkht Ishq grossed Rs 9-10 crore on their first day.
Aamir Khan has been having blockbuster Christmas releases for three years now. The actor’s latest flick earned worldwide gross revenues of Rs 9 crore on Thursday, Rs 2 crore more than his 2008 hit, Ghajini.
Two large multiplex players said most of the shows have 90-95% bookings, with several of them running to full houses. Incidentally, the multiplexes increased prices by 10-15% for 3 Idiots, which usually is the norm for movies starring marque actors. “This could be one of the best openings of a movie this year in terms of theatrical revenues. Going by the advance booking numbers, we believe the movie will continue to get similar response for the next few days,” Delhi-based PVR Cinemas CEO Amitabh Vardhan said.
Mumbai-based multiplex Inox Leisure’s CEO Alok Tandon added that the advance bookings are between 85% and 90% for the weekend. While the movie has opened well, “it’s still too early to say whether it will be the biggest blockbuster of the year,” trade analyst Taran Adarsh said.
“In Australia, multiplexes have reduced shows of the movie, Avatar and increased shows for 3 Idiots,” Vidhu Vinod Chopra, producer of the movie, said.
Produced by Vinod Chopra Productions, 3 Idiots was distributed in collaboration with Reliance Big Pictures. Made on an estimated budget of Rs 35 crore, 3 Idiots has been released with 1,894 prints, of which 1,550 went to the Indian market and 344 went overseas.

Box Office: 3 Idiots opens very well
Thursday, December 24, 2009
There was an interesting choice offered in two films from big banners this December for Indians. Aditya Chopra's Rocket Singh sold its film with a supposed 'ordinary joe' named Harpreet Singh Bedi who scores 37 percent marks and tries to lead a group of disparate Indians at his company, though unsuccessfully at the box office.
On the other end was the movie 3 Idiots, which sells a Gujrati engineering student as its hero topping the college ranks and leading a group of other disparate Indians towards self-actualization.
The promos of Rocket Singh even alluded to the triumph of 37 percenters over 97 percenters (IIT/IIM types). Ironically that wasn't to be at the box office as reverse has happened. The country is more fascinated with the 97 percenters and their thinking and lifestyle if the opening of 3 Idiots is anything to go by.
3 Idiots has opened to a very good response in India on Thursday (released a day early). Of all the films such as Kurbaan, Rocket Singh, that have been given high volume screenings recently, this one has justified it to the extent by taking an opening of 75-80% at multiplexes despite 15-20 shows running. The evening shows Thursday were going near full occupancy and bookings for Christmas day which is of course a holiday indicate 80%+ Friday after underwhelming advance earlier. Saturday and Sunday are trailing somewhat in advance at about 30-40% but should also pick up as the reports are positive. It may get affected somewhat in Hyderabad-Nizam due to riots and theater shutdowns over Telangana there. And the film will likely do better at multiplexes and metros than single screens at B&C centers but the box office response overall appears towards most sumptious this year in the early going.
Aamir Khan's strategy of following Tom Hanks of Hollywood and doing 1 quality big film a year has been working for him much of this decade and if 3 Idiots sustains past the weekend, the actor will likely end up with two back to back top grossers in 2008/2009. His first release of the decade was Mela in Jan 2000, which was a box office flop but since then the decade has been almost nothing but a string of successes. His box office averages for the decade are higher than Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan and the rest.
The film has opened very well in USA also where it released Wednesday.
Director Raj Kumar Hirani appears to have special interest in Gujrat. His previous release Lage Raho Munnabhai too ran on the Indian goodwill for the great Gujrati, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.
The film has released on over 1000 prints on 1400 screens. In few weeks, Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra will be making the film available on youtube for downloads as well.

MUMBAI: Winding up what has been a rather average year for the Indian box office, Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 3 Idiots, which is directed by Rajkumar Hirani and distributed by Reliance BIG Pictures, is slated to release with the highest ever print and screen count across the world. The initial reports coming in are fabulous.
3 Idiots released with 1550 prints across 1760 screens worldwide on 25 December, 2009. This surpasses previous big releases like Ghajini, which was released with 1150 prints, Singh is Kinng (1050 prints), Kambhaqt Ishq (1000 prints), Welcome (975 prints) and OSO (975 prints), Love Aaj Kaal and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (950 prints).
In the overseas, the movie released with 342 prints across 366 screens, which is the highest ever so far for a Hindi film. OSO released with 325 prints in the overseas, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi - 315 prints, Kambhaqt Ishq and Singh is Kinng - 275 prints, Love Aaj Kal and Ghajini - 250 prints and Welcome released with 200 prints.
Advance booking for movies is considered a thing of the past these days but 3 Idiots has seen bookings of almost 40-45 per cent for the weekend and this is likely to go up as the word spreads. The movie's show in India began in the evening on Wednesday, 24 December. The 6 pm and 9 pm were going houseful at multiplexes.
With Christmas falling on Friday, multiplexes and single screens alike are expected to be making merry with the crowds thronging for 3 Idiots. Additionally, with excellent reviews and word of mouth, the movie is bound to charter higher ground and set new benchmarks.
3 Idiots stars Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Boman Irani.

"3 Idiots retains the soul of 5 Point Someone" - Chetan Bhagat http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/temp...mages/clip.gif
By Nikhil Ramsubramaniam, December 24, 2009 - 18:27 IST http://images.bollywoodhungama.com/i...c/chetanb1.jpg Very few authors have managed to reach out to such a wide audience as Chetan Bhagat. The writer of international bestsellers like '5 Point Someone', 'One Night @ Call Centre', '3 Mistakes of My Life' and '2 States' have been widely read and now he is all set to see yet another of his book being made into a film. On the eve of 3 Idiots release, Chetan Bhagat speaks to Bollywood Hungama and talks about why 3 Idiots is a special film, his next big project and lots more.
After 'One Night @ the Call Centre', yet another book of yours '5 Point Someone' is all set to be seen in its celluloid version (3 Idiots). How does it feel?
It feels great. This time it's a far bigger film, the buzz about 3 Idiots is enormous. We have done the right thing by putting the film ahead of us. It's an incredible feeling to be able to reach out to so many people through the medium of cinema.
http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/temp...mages/open.gif Initially I did sit down with Raju and Abhijat while they were deciding to make a film based on '5 Point Someone'. I even went to IIT with Abhijat a couple of times. http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/temp...ages/close.gif The screenplay has been written by Raju Hirani and Abhijat Joshi...Would you have liked to be a part of the screenplay writing process?
Initially I did sit down with Raju and Abhijat while they were deciding to make a film based on '5 Point Someone'. I even went to IIT with Abhijat a couple of times. But it was just not possible for me to be involved at every stage of the screenplay writing process since I was in Hong Kong at that time, working full time and busy writing other books. Moreover, Abhijat is based in USA, Raju was in the US for quite a while working on the screenplay but it was not practical for me to do that.
http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/temp...mages/open.gif 3 Idiots is different from the book but at the same time it does borrow many things from the book. The core theme and message of the film is coming from the book itself. http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/temp...ages/close.gif The question on everyone's mind is how similar the film is to the book? Raju Hirani says that the film is just 10% of the book....your comments.
I don't think Raju must have said something like that. In fact I just met him a few days ago and we spoke at length about the film etc. See...'5 Point Someone' has over the years achieved cult status and has its own loyal fans. I am sure they would like to see each and every moment of the book on the big screen but that is not how the process works. Adapting a book and making it into a film is a relatively new thing in India. The film retains the soul of the book. 3 Idiots is different from the book but at the same time it does borrow many things from the book. The core theme and message of the film is coming from the book itself. And that's why the makers have officially credited the film as 'Based on a novel by Chetan Bhagat'
You are but obviously not directly involved with the film and its promotional strategies...does it upset you?
Not at all...at the end of the day I want the film to be a good film and I am happy that a film whose base is generated from my book has generated so much response and is the talk of the town.
Aamir recently was on an innovative promotional spree travelling the length and breadth of the country...what do you think about this marketing strategy?
http://images.bollywoodhungama.com/i...c/chetanb2.jpg When you have Aamir Khan, I don't think anybody else needs to be involved in marketing of the film. Aamir is known for his innovative style of marketing. He will never directly say, 'Please come and watch my film' but he will do something that will grab your attention and make you go and watch the film. I am really inspired by his marketing. In fact there is a lesson for a lot of Indian marketing companies on the way Aamir does the marketing of his films.
Moving on from 3 Idiots, how is work coming along on the film based on your book '3 Mistakes of My Life' being made by Excel Entertainment?
http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/temp...mages/open.gif I am really inspired by Aamir's marketing. In fact there is a lesson for a lot of Indian marketing companies on the way Aamir does the marketing of his films. http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/temp...ages/close.gif Abhishek Kapoor (the director) is very conscious of the comparisons that will come between the book and the film and hence we (Abhijit, Pubali Chaudhari and I) are taking great care in writing the screenplay of the film. In fact even today as we speak, I am working on the screenplay of the film based on '3 Mistakes Of My life'. We are aware that after Rock On and 3 Idiots, there will be a lot of expectations from people and hence we are working very hard on getting the screenplay right. I think we should be able to finalise it soon and begin casting in a month or so.
Your most recent novel '2 States' was launched a couple of months ago...how has been the response so far?
'2 States' has had a fantastic response... easily the best of all the 4 books, that's because it's a very universal love story with a good dose of humour. It's a very good book for a lot of people to relate and enjoy. It also carries a nice message. Especially in the South, the book has done extraordinarily well. I think I have been able to meet my fans expectations which is the ultimate dream for any writer.
http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/temp...mages/open.gif '2 States' has had a fantastic response... easily the best of all the 4 books, that's because it's a very universal love story with a good dose of humour. http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/temp...ages/close.gif That book would make for an interesting Bollywood potboiler...any plans to adapt that book into a film too?
There have been many offers but I know that my fans would like me to be involved with only A-grade Bollywood. I don't want to sell the rights to any filmmaker just for the heck of it. It should go into the right hands so that it emerges as one of the best films of the year
What else are you busy with these days apart from tweeting....the buzz is that you are scripting a film?
Twitter is a great way to stay connected with my fans. Yes...I do want to script a romantic comedy. Abhishek Kapoor has taught me a lot about screenplay writing. The best part about working with Abhishek is that he has shown me how the screenplay language works and also how to use restraint. Rock On was such a film that expressed so much more in spite of being subtle. My books tend to be quite filmy sometimes (laughs). It's ironical that a filmmaker is telling me to be less filmy but I am forever indebted to Abhishek for teaching me these things about screenplay writing. Now I am hoping that I can do a better job.
