an okay-ish mass film banking on rajini and four or five heavy moments that work. big time.
as a fan tribute, as a superstar showcase, and in terms of writing and making, Petta is a better product.
this kind of massive BO success, if anything, only shows that when rajini is packaged/presented well in his strong zone (despite his obvious, age-related slowing down), he's unstoppable, just beyond competition. without even one conventional fight sequence, the man's charisma comes through, without looking forced. it's a Chemistry not every filmmaker gets. Nelson gets it here but as a film, this is still underwhelming.
I also feel that most of these raving viewer reports (media reviews are going with bad/average/watchable mostly) are coming out because this does give that kind of a high when watched with a big crowd. they also leave the hall on that high because of the heady climax (like Vikram). I'll wait till August 16 to see if this has the legs to take down PS1 at the BO.
as a side note, I see some serious hate thrown at Beast here. that film is way, way better than that cringe-fest Telugu serial called Varisu. it is also in line with Nelson's world-building that peaked with Doctor -- quirky fun with some cool violence. hope this success gives Nelson the mojo to return to that world.
