MOVIE REVIEW
Yet another different attempt from the neighbouring state. I could go ahead and call this "avant garde" stuff, simply for the never-before-seen narrative in its genre. This is a film with no story. Absolutely zero plot. There is no movement from point A to point B. It just moves. It moves for 30 long days, and narrates various events during that one month.
The film feels like reading a diary of 30 days. And it has various chapters within this month-long chapter. Each of these days provides us with ample entertainment while they last. Not only while they last, but even later, because they have plenty of recall value. They are immensely memorable, in short. This is stuff that should make one engaging, classic TV series. I wouldn't mind watching 11 more months of such a template. It is all very mundane, but damn intriguing. Nothing looks forced once you consider the overall structure. It is just like you followed Sub-Inspector Biju with a camera for a month. So you just can't blame him for doing "unwanted" things. It is all in the ride.
The only niggle I felt was the fact that the film was narrated non-linearly with a single-flashback formula. This totally went against the style of the screenplay. That "connecting" element would make every one in the audience look and search for a story, or draw parallels within those events. But as nothing really connects, it doesn't work. This is where the makers went wrong. But at least they were sane enough not to introduce a subplot just to make the "climax" look like one. They did not force the non-existent story to reach a "high". They just let the ride on its own.
There is so much to like about the film. The best stretch involves a drunk man stripping in public and then being used as a singer in the police station. It is hard not to smile in this sequence, as the old guy's smirk is almost infectious. Such small elements make this the likeable watch that it is. There is a lot to admire on the technical front as well. The songs, and the pulsating BGM make it a worthwhile experience. The cinematography keeps getting better towards the end. Nivin keeps it straight, and carries over the presence from "Premam" to a rather restrained zone.
At the end of the day, the makers achieved what they wanted to. Engross us without a story. Abrid Shine seems to be a really interesting film-maker. He started with 1983, a routine, yet different tale of inspiration. He wants to inspire us here as well, but in a very subdued manner. And he wins, yet again.
