Will it be a 1000th career win for RogerFederer? Preview of the Brisbane final v Raonic

After reaching the final last year, with a new coach and new racquet behind him, Federer hardly looked back throughout 2014, and it looks as though he is well on his way to kick-starting his 2015 in much the same way.

After shaking off the rust against an inspired local hero in John Millman in his late opener, Federer has been in devastating form since. He pretty much destroyed Aussie wildcard James Duckworth for the loss of just one game, and although hopes were high that Grigor Dimitrov might shine and test Federer, he despatched the Bulgarian with a routine 6-2 6-2 win.

He was happy with the result, and inevitably with the hype now gathering pace around his potential 1000th career win, was playing down the significance of such an achievement.

He said after the match: "It's a great result. I'm glad I didn't waste much time today to feel fresh for tomorrow. It would be great to get 1000, but I'm not there yet so let's not talk about it!

He will have his work cut out though as Raonic battled through a triple tie-break semi-final against Kei Nishikori to claim just his second win against the Japanese player. After a little over two and a half hours with neither player dropping serve, Raonic prevailed 6-7(4) 7-6(4) 7-6(4) to reach his second final of the year, having started the year as runner up to Tomas Berdych in the exhibition World Tennis Thailand Championships in Hua Hin.

Looking ahead to his final on Sunday, Raonic said: "I've got to serve well. That's always been a key. The last few matches I started poorly. So I got to keep that pressure on him and then sort of step up when I can create my opportunities. I think that's a good place to start."

Federer knows it is going to be a different challenge, facing the big serving Canadian.

He admitted: "I expect little time and little rallies in tomorrow's match.”

Federer and Raonic are scheduled on the Pat Rafter Arena, not before 7pm (9am GMT).
