    'For Dhoni, Sachin is God'

Cliches are clichés, but at best of times, they convey the message far more tellingly as in the case of Sachin: form is temporary, class is permanent.

Watching the little big man wading into an admittedly mediocre New Zealand attack at the tiny Christchurch ground, it evoked nostalgia. I distinctly remember the first time he opened in an ODI, back in 1994, also in New Zealand, when he “put his hand up” after regular Sidhu opted out due to an injury. Partnering Ajay Jadeja, Sachin blasted a 69-ball 82 with 15 boundaries and two sixes as India won by seven wickets. He was adjudged Man of the Match.

I saw the highlights of that game the same evening, almost 15 years to the day, and we wondered again at the sheer talent. It was much the same on Sunday when Sachin dismantled the Kiwi bowling en route to his first ODI century in New Zealand.

A lot has happened since March 27, 1994 and today, we even question his presence in the ODI squad given the fact that he is 35 and obviously slowed down, if only a wee bit.

Although being one of the biggest fans of Sachin, I did think that he would be better off batting lower down the order so as to keep the Sehwag-Gambhir partnership going and also in view of the string of low scores in the recent past. But then, Sachin, as he has done over the past two decades, silenced his critics with yet another century! Perhaps, it is time then we all clam up and let the great man alone.
Off and on, I have been in touch with persons who have moved closely with Dhoni and all of them were unanimous in their observation that the Indian captain thinks the world of Sachin. “For MS, Sachin is God,” said a former India player. “If Sachin wants to open, he will. Nobody can question his decision, leave alone stop him.”

That being the case, it is more than likely that Sachin is under lesser pressure than at any time in his illustrious career. He has been given the freedom of choice and I am sure that Sachin appreciates this gesture.

His recent statements to the effect that he is enjoying his cricket now more than ever vindicates this belief and may be, this is the best way to salute a man who has been living our dreams since 1989.

Dhoni apart, the likes of Sehwag and Yuvraj, in particular, the other key members of the squad, have never hesitated to acknowledge Sachin’s contributions to their own batting. Under the circumstances, it is best that we let matters rest rather than speculate Sachin’s utility or his future. As Sachin’s close friend Ravi Shastri said recently (and repeatedly), there is still plenty left in the tank.

Sachin is a legend: Aamir Khan

Mumbai: When the whole Indian cricket fraternity is rallying behind Sachin Tendulkar and lambasting the ICC for putting him 26th in their list of all-time cricketing greats, here's one more voice in the club Aamir Khan.

"Sachin Tendulkar is undoubtedly one of the greatest cricketers the world has ever seen. His kind of a genius is rare and I consider myself fortunate to be counted among his friends. He is a legend and let's accept that," says Aamir.

The star, basking in the glory of his latest film Ghajini registering a record collection at the box office, says that he will always set an attacking field if he is asked to lead a team against Sachin when he is at the crease.

"Whatever be my strategy as a captain, I don't think that I will be able to get him out. But still, I will set a very aggressive field for him with more fielders within the circle, two slips and perhaps another fielder at forward short leg," the star says.

Contrary to reports, Aamir says that he has never played the game with the batting maestro - not even gully cricket. "I am yet to play some gully cricket with Sachin. I am sure that is going to be a lot of fun...," he smiles.

Not only Sachin, Aamir says that he has always been playing a host to the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team for the last two decades. "I used to invite the Bombay cricket team for private screenings of my movie. We (Sachin and he) kept on meeting during those private screenings and I remember that after seeing Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, he couldn't stop praising the film and my acting. By that time, Sachin was already a name to reckon with in international cricket."

Aamir says there are these little gestures from Sachin that always touch his heart. "I still remember attending a party a few years and Sachin was introducing me to Glenn McGrath while Shane Warne was standing beside him. He told Glenn, 'the kind of person I am on the field, this man is in front of the camera.' It felt so good. I was touched. This was just after the release of Lagaan."

    Sachin on 199 - 1 more needed for 200

With the 2 wickets that Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar took on the 5th day of the 3rd test match against NZ..Sachin takes his tally of International Wickets to 199 in all formats of the game(T20+ODI+Tests)....

Sachin Needs just one more wicket to complete 200 wickets in International cricket...Another achievement for him...Who said God cannot bowl?????

    Sachin's Wickets Tally
    T20 - 1 Wicket from 1 Match(1 Innings)
    ODI - 154 Wickets from 425 Matches(266 Innings)
    Test - 44 Wickets from 159 Matches(127 Innings)
