Review
--------
In today's world where every other person is chasing some target or the other as part of work, human values dont stand a chance. Each one wants to be at the top, to be the best performer and satisfy some number in their goal sheet. All this, to keep their families happy and to aim bigger than what you can reach for. Such is the thought process behind Lal Jose's latest movie 'Emmanuel'. 'Emmanuel' does take you on, about a moral question which we often face in our innerselves, but usually choose to follow the way the crowd goes.
For starters, 'Emmanuel' is a very average script with some sparkling moments at times. First 30 minutes or so are good and you start wondering if this is the best family movie of recent times. With the office work of Emmanuel, the graph dips soon with average proceedings. Many a tracks are built and kept ready for the second half but one needs patience in these portions. What saves here is that Lal Jose does not let the movie fall to 'unbearable' terms with his direction. Interval arrives with an expected turn. Overall, above average feel at this point.
Second half again beings in the same graph. Lay off scene, Immigrant labour problem, Emmanuel's tryst to get his family a home, a cancer patient's plight, all seem to come and go with an average and lag feel. The script is 'compulsive', as in trying to hammer and drive down things, to make it sound important. The kid's clay modelling, painting everything is magnified to drive home the same point time and again. But once again, it does not fall to 'bad' levels. The wait for the end is there, since so many threads have been built and kept ready. And yes, it does come in a grand way. Some really heart touching closing scenes lifts 'Emmanuel' back to where it was at the start. 'Emmanuel' makes you feel good by the time end credits roll.
Performance wise, Mammotty as 'Emmanuel' is the star. Its after some time that we see a role which makes him think at times as a performer. The innocence, street smartness, kindness and the humanity is all well etched. Fahad Fazil puts in yet another convincing performance as the demonic boss. Scenes with both of them are good to watch for the performance levels. Reenu Mathews as Mammotty's wife and the kid are ok. Sunil Sukhada, Nedumudi Venu, P.Balachandran, Nandu, Sukumari, the supporting cast is long and competent.
Music is passe. The church song comes at a good point so it registers. Cinematography is decent. Editing could have been better. 2 hours 20 minutes seems a tad long for this movie. Background score is competent enough.
At the end, dont have gargantuan hopes from 'Emmanuel'. Its a simple movie that leaves you with a very interesting thought, that all dreams need not be fulfilled always. One can still be happy without achieving those but being a human is more important. That is something one essentially needs, to have a happy heart and peaceful life.
Rating - 3/5
Verdict - Feel Human.
