Perspective. That is the Difference

Om Shanti Oshana
PVR Lulu, 27/2/14
Review
---------
Perspectives make quite the difference, don't they? We have seen the eternal love story of the hero so many times. The constant persual, dejection, fear, competition, perseverance and the final union. But perhaps the difference which debutant director Jude Anthony brings to the table in 'Om Shanti Oshana' is that of the same love story in a different perspective. That of the Girl's. Not for that one reason but also for the smart, engaging screenplay and delightful moments packed one after the other, 'Om Shanti Oshana' becomes the worthiest trip to theaters this year (so far).
The movie begins on a fresh note. We know that its the heroine Pooja (Nazriya) who is going to lead the story. Title cards are well done. The movie starts of showing Pooja's thoughts and her family. Her chemistry with her dad (played by Ranji Panicker) is a treat to watch. The initial twist comes when Pooja decides that she would find her groom on her own and scouts choices for the same. There enters Giri (Nivin). Following portions are when she tries to discover more about him, tries to chase and get closer to him. The scene where Giri responds to Pooja's possible love is well done. By the Interval, the movie feels good.
Post interval, the movie keeps going at the same fashion as in the first half. Introduction of Vineeth, Lal Jose all keep the interest going. The scenes are done quite interestingly. A few dream sequences are also there, of which the Army one is a sour point. Aju Varghese plays Pooja's cousin who has a slight negative touch and keeps his part decently interesting. The movie seems like its about to loose steam because the end looks predictable and it may have dragged to that end. But some beautiful moments towards the end save the day. Pooja now a woman in love, her helping hand for Giri's dreams, her almost giving up on him, the final union and the twist at the end, it all raises the movie a few levels above the usual. By the end, its good.
Among the winners in this movie, Nivin Pauly has done a good role as 'Giri' even though with limited space. His impact is better than many movies with more screen length. Shaan Rahman has done really well once more at his forte - Romantic Musicals. All the songs are well done and gel with the movie. Background score also needs a mention. Editor Lijo Paul keeps the movie engaging throughout. Ranji Panicker, Aju Varghese, Lal Jose, Vineeth all have done their parts well but more than that the casting is immaculate. Next up would be the leading lady, Nazriya Nazim. In a central role, she just perfectly fits the girly charm and the innocence. She usually tends to go over the top but here since the character is placed suitably, it tends to augur well for her. Pooja is sometimes tomboyish, sometimes quirky. She is sweet, lovable and at the same time will live the way she likes. Her struggles with her inner self, her desire for love and equation with her dad, all make it a character to remember. Nazriya gives quite a life to 'Pooja'.
The biggest winner of them all is undoubtedly Jude Anthony, the Director. From choosing a heroine centric love story, to making it absoluletly delightful to watch, to creating wonderful screen moments, Jude Anthony scores big. He looks a promising director for the future. There is much confidence in the movie and its visible at many times. Until the very end, he never lets go or shy away, which may have been the case if he had thought about adverse audience reactions. Well done!!
Negatives could be the predictability of the end and also without big time twists, flashbacks some in the audience may feel the 'lack of story' as they say.
To sum it all up, team behind 'OSO' needs a pat on the back. For making us see the girl's perspective, which we often miss, even though they are half the population. Also, for creating a wonderfully watchable love story. It not only promotes the Girl Child (how often do we see that in movies) but also the Girl's view point. So, gather the ladies at home and head to the theatres - there should be some smiling faces around you soon.
Rating - 3/5
Verdict - Absolutely Adorable
