Movie - Rajadhi Raja

Review
----------
Its the summer of the year 1991 and the Super Star of Bollywood - Amitabh Bachchan is going through a rough patch in his career after 7-8 Box Office failures. Out comes the movie 'Hum' (1991) about an underworld Don (Tiger) who gives up his notorious ways to seek living as a commoner (Shekhar). The movie is a runaway hit. 'Hum' has South super star Rajnikanth play Amitabh's brother. The formula gets made in to Tamil in 1995 as 'Baasha' and the result is even bigger. 'Baasha' still remains formula movie with a cult status. Cut to 2014, Mammotty is going through a lean patch and the very same formula is reinvented as Director Ajai Vasudev's - 'Rajadhi Raja'.
'Rajadhi Raja' is made on a formula tried and tested over 25 years. An undercover don (from Mumbai) who lives as a simpleton (Shekharan kutty - quite close to Shekhar from 'Hum') for his family. So much so that he never picks a fight. He gets beaten, bullied, harassed but would not raise his voice. All this while we waited anticipated for the eventual - the big turn around. It comes and the audience is in splits. Its a natural high. But for this formula to succeed the movie needs to be executed well. In this case director Ajai Vasudev has succeeded in doing that. The magic in the formula, is hence intact.
As expected first half is based on lighter comedies and a downplayed Mammotty. The interval twist is well done. Second half reveals the back story and then there is a mission to be taken. There are portions in the second half which can make you feel that its almost getting lost but the director quite manages to pull it back. The climax showdown set inside a discotheque (a good choice than the usual go down) adds to the razzmatazz. By the end, you should have enjoyed if you are in expecting a formula movie.
On the technical side, Ajai Vasudev has executed an entertainer in an above average way. Camera, Editing are adequate for the movie. Background score keeps up the mood but is loud as expected.
The movie belongs to one single man. From playing a sedate, downplayed 'Shekharan Kutty' in the first half to aggressive transformation (watch out for his body language shift) at the Interval, Mammotty looks much interested to get in the act. He adds the much needed switch between the good, common man and diminutive don. Jojo adds fun in the first half and leaves a mark. Rest of the cast are ok. The band of villains look straight from a 'B' class action movie.
All in all, 'Rajadhi Raja' is a beaten to death formula which has been executed well. It does not have much of a dull phase which helps. And above all such a movie is all about the hero and thankfully Mammotty is the sole reason which can keep you hooked on the screen. The formula still has some magic, if made with some heart.
Rating - 3/5
Verdict - Much Watchable Formula
