Continuing my 3 day Series on Top 5s of 2009, the second one is Top 5 Stars and Actors of the year.

Rationale - A % point out of 100 of which 60% weightage on the 'Actor' part of the person (his performances) and rest on his star value (box-office pull and success). Please also note that this is based only on movies in 2009 and no graph previous to this or after this is considered.

    Top 5 Malayalam Stars & Actors 2009
    ----------------------------------------------
5 - Jayaram - Coming to 2009 on a comeback high of 'Veruthe Oru Bharya', Jayaram was lucky enough to be the good books of Satyan Anthikadu in 2009. His solo hit came in the form of 'Bhagyadevatha'.Though it may be termed as a hit due to the director but still the hero clings on to his space. The rest of the year has been forgetful for this comeback star. With old movies held up in cans being released like 'Winter', 'Seetha Kalyanam' there was no respite at the BO. His only other hope Akku Akbar's 'Kaanakanmani' also sank without a trace. With an assured project with Satyan in 2010, which is almost like a gauranteed hit, and a few average releases like 'My Big Father' and 'Happy Husbands' coming up, Jayaram just about manages to hold on to the 5th Spot on this Top 5.

4 - Jayasurya - The biggest achievement of 2009, is that no longer can we deny the presence of young stars like Jayasurya and Prithviraj as solo heroes. 2009 has written that forever.Thats significant as far as Malayalees attitude to Non M movies are concerned. Jayasurya made his mark with his solo hit 'Ivar Vivahitarayal'. The small - medium budget movie became a good hit with family support. He also had some small movies like 'Uthara swayamvaram' which was not a washout and may end up as average. Jayasurya also shared some limelight in the youth techno robbery movie 'Robinnhood' which had a stupendous opening. His other releases were 'Currency', 'Vairam' both of which had some good opinions. With a possible comic caper 'Gulumaal' with Kunchacko and Muti starrer comedy 'Happy Husbands' coming in the next few days, Jayasurya looks promising as a small budget family - comic solo hero and also a star in multistarrers, finds the 4th spot in this Top 5.

3 - Mohanlal- Mohanlal's biggest movie of the year was 'Sagar Alias Jackey'. The most hyped movie of the year got a thunderous opening but found it hard to be average at the end of it. This was a jolt to his year 2009. He came back strong with the best performance by any actor in 2009, as 'Shivankutty' in Blessy's 'Bhramaram'. The performance was fantabulous and the movie seemed like an avegare to safe Hit. After that followed many debacles like 'Bhagavan' and 'Angel John'. Poor selection of movies continues to dominate Mohanlal's 2009. He also had screen space with Kamal Hassan in 'Unnaipol Oruvan'. The rest of the year is promising with Rpshan Andrews's 'Ividam Swargamanu'. Looks almost like a winner on the way. From being dicey with his selections to breath taking 'Shivankutty', 2009 has been contrasting for Mohanlal, hence at Number 3 in the Top 5.

2 - Prithviraj - After trying for years, but never having been truly able to be a bankable solo star, even after genuinely good movies like 'Thirakadha, 2009 saw Prithviraj break free with a solo super hit 'Puthiya Mugham'. At best an average movie was raised to another level with his energy and the fire he addded the role. Not be left out is his rendition of the title track of the movie, the visuals of which became a +ve for the movie's opening. With a superb physique, first time we had a young hero who could carry the role of college revenge with conviction. He followed it up with the super opeing of Robinhood in which he sparkled along with Narein. In the experimental 'Kerala Cafe' his small role was taken with much reception. His voice over scenes were adding mood to 'Island Express'. With key projects lined up in 2010, here is hoping that the young hero of Malayalam keeps his head stable and rises to the number 1 spot in the next year's Top 5.

1 - Mammotty - A dismal end to 2008 and a lacklustre start to 2009, less people expected Mammotty to salvage his year by the end, as he did. Beginning of with disasters like 'Love in Singapore' and 'Ee Pattanathil Bhootham', it almost felt like Mammotty was continuing from where he left off in 2008. Both were 'unsahikkable' movies and did not do much to bring any respite to BO as well. Then came 'Daddy Cool' and it was somewhat of a saviour when compared to the previous 2 movies. As a stylish Dad, Mammotty struck superb rapport with the kid star and with stylish songs the movie almost had a decent status at the BO. Then came the surprise. 'Loud speaker' came with not much noise but it had the performance of the year for Mammotty as Mike Philippose. A small movie about human goodness and friendship was definetely worthwhile. Though the movie may be struggled to reach an average Hit status, his performance was superb.
Finally, the most anticipated movie for many years, 'PazhassiRaja' came among high expectations. Though SarathKumar stole the show with a better written character, Mammotty held on to his own and his charm worked as the king. Pazhassiraja as it closes to 50 days will be remembered for raising the technical excellence and scale of Malayalam Cinema and ofcourse whenever its spoken about its main protagonist will always be mentioned which was played by Mammotty. He also had some powerful minutes in 'Kerala Cafe'. With 'Paleri Maikyam' promising a good movie with atleast one strong role (of wat looks like a double role) and a commerical mass masala 'Chattambi nadu' to follow, Mammotty undoubtedly has salvaged his 2009 from no where. For the phoenix like performance within a single year, Mammotty is the No.1 Star and Actor of 2009 in this Top 5.

Tomorrow - Watch out for Top 5 Movies of 2009.

I would love to watch this movie beside and help me figure out where and when Sharath Kumar outclassed Mammootty in performance and his character development being better..

I know this is your personal judgement, but this is just to show disagreement from my part..

Thanks Moovybuff, you are free to disagree, no issues. Its just that its my opinion and may be many others also that Sarathkumar was a show stealer (may be as no one expected anything from him). There may be others also who say that Mammotty was supreme. so it will go on as opinions differ.

Yes, Thanks SK I completely agree. I have already chalked out my Top 5 movies and 'Shivankutty' has the right recognition on that.
