Less Romance
-----------------
Movie - London Bridge
1/2/14 @ PVR Lulu
Review
---------
Its more or less possible that the better romantic movies that you have watched, would have explored one or two interesting lead characters in depth. It would have had some sparkling and special moments between the lead cast, that you can identify with. It may have had some wonderful songs which have been shot with some character and identity. Director Anil C Menon's 'London Bridge' sadly lacks in all these departments and that makes it a lesser romantic movie, much lesser.
Prithviraj, who is coming up with a lighter movie after a string of impressive choices, does quite decent as the ambitious money lender - 'Vijay'. His performance is quite central to the movie and does not look very out of place. His costumes and get up are tad irritating at times. Andrea as 'Pavithra' has nothing much to do and she looks less interested most of the times. Nanditha as 'Merin' was supposed to be the show stealer, if the movie had to succeed. She looks pretty and acts decent. Be it Vijay or Merin or Pavithra, all look restricted caricatures and with no spunk. You never get to know them better even after being with them for 2.5 hours. Thats a shame in a romantic movie.
First half is quite a decent watch. The slight twist and turns keep the proceedings alive. But the writer and director tend to deal things superficially, which seems to be an approaching danger for the second half. By the end of first half, the movie begins to lag. Post interval, its all going pretty down hill. The problem is that the movie never becomes a 'natural love triangle'. Its always a love story between two characters with a forced perception of a triangle. And we surely know while watching, that its not going to create any tension or friction by the end. The movie slowly moves towards its climax and tests patience by its close.
Cinematography is good but why do all overseas movies have to look like sight seeing trips? Editing could surely have been better and a good 20 mins shorter. Music is decent but all songs look similar which is a fault from the conception stage.
Just for a thought, there is this wonderful scene between Hrithik Roshan and Kathrina Kaif in the 2011 Bollywood movie 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara', where a similar money minded young businessman gets a reality check on love and life from a free spirited girl who loves adventures. There is not as much romance in the whole of the movie 'London Bridge' as its there in that scene, even though the lead cast's journey looks similar. What more can one say!!
