3 Idiots has passed the cinegoer’s test with flying colours. The Aamir Khan-starrer raked in Rs 12.5 crore on Friday. Experts estimate the movie to net Rs 40 crore over the first weekend from the box office, with gross collections of Rs 65 crore. Khan’s last release, Ghajini, earned around Rs 40 crore net in the first four days, since the movie released on a Thursday. Aamir Khan said: “The response is huge, we are still gathering the enormity of opening collections. To match Ghajini’s opening day collections is something, to surpass Ghajini is completely overwhelming.”

“3 Idiots would set the record for the biggest opening of this year,” added Ashish Saksena, COO, BIG Cinemas. Till date, Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer Love Aaj Kal topped the chart with net collections of Rs 28 crore on first three days, followed by Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, featuring Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor and Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor’s Kambakkht Ishq, both at around Rs 23-24 crore.
Across multiplexes, the movie has witnessed over 95 per cent occupancies. “The film has lived up to expectations. We are hoping the extended holiday on Monday will add to 3 Idiots’ festivity,” confirmed Alok Tandon, CEO, INOX Leisure.

“The movie definitely had a repeat value,” said a media expert. No wonder, the producer, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, was able to convince theatre chain owners to increase ticket prices 30 per cent for evening shows and almost 100 per cent for morning shows. Ticket prices now range between Rs 300 and Rs 350 per person for evening shows and Rs 100-120 for morning shows. 3 Idiots released with over 1,500 prints in India and 344 prints overseas.

MUMBAI: 3 Idiots has managed to bid 2009 a befitting adieu. After shattering opening day box office collections in India, the movie has managed to break records in the overseas market too.
While the India box office collections for 3 Idiots are staggering, the movie has so far collected a whopping $ 2 million (Rs 10 crore) in overseas markets like the US, Canada, the UK and UAE till Friday.
Adding the India and overseas collections, the movie has now done a business of Rs 225 million (Rs 22.50 crore) worldwide till Friday.
Till Friday, the movie collected $ 1 million in North America, $550,000 in the UAE and £163,000 in the UK.

Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhavan), Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi), and Rancho or Rancchoddas Shyamaldas Chanchad (Aamir Khan) are three engineering students who all share the same room in a hostel at the fictional ICE, one of the best colleges in India (modelled after IIT). While Farhan and Raju are mediocre students from modest backgrounds, Rancho is a wealthy genius who studies for the sheer joy of it. Yet it is precisely his passion for knowledge and his gift for creating machines that incurs the wrath of Professor Viru Sahastrabudhhe (ViruS) (Boman Irani). Threatened by Rancho's talent, ViruS labels him an "idiot" and attempts on a number of occasions to destroy his friendship with Farhan and Raju. ViruS sends letters to both Farhan's and Raju's parents warning them about their sons being led astray by Rancho. They crash into ViruS' elder daughter Mona's wedding where Rancho advises ViruS' pre-med daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor) regarding her fiancee who always runs after expensive items and price-tags. In contrast, ViruS’ model student is Chatur Ramalingam or "Silencer," (Omi Vaidya) a geek who lives by conforming to the expectations of the system, mindless cramming, and unethical means of destroying his competition. Meanwhile, Rancho also falls in love with Pia. Rancho also does a prank on Chatur. Who is giving a speech at a ceremony, Rancho knowing Chatur is not good at Hindi, he revises the essay to make it sound hilarious and insulting to Virus. Also, he tries to fix a device made by a student named Joy Lobo, but when he does, he discovers Joy has committed suicide because of the ViruS, who told him he would not graduate that year for not completing a project. Also, Farhan and Raju dare Rancho to tell Pia he loves her, and when they go to her house, Raju gets drunk and makes sure the mailbox says "ViruS" and peeing on it. ViruS sees Raju and they are caught in class, he tells Raju that either him or Rancho gets rusticated, unable to make a decision, Raju attempts suicide, only to be saved by Rancho, Farhan, and Pia. He recovers but is still in shock. His friends and mother decide to bring him out of the state. Rancho succeeds by saying Farhan is marrying his sister (much to Farhan's shock). In which he wakes and says, "I know your fibbing." Much to everyone's joy. Also, Farhan's dad lets him become a wild life photographer, and Raju gets a job, resulting in the ViruS losing his mustache and in revenge, he decides to change the final exam, but Raju passes anyways. Also, when the electricity goes out and it rains heavily, Pia's sister Mona's (who is pregnant)water breaks and she has to give birth immediately. With a webcam and Pia's help, Rancho delivers the baby. But it is not breathing. Pia is hearbroken after all that but when Rancho says, "All is Well" the baby kicks and starts to cry much to everyone's joy.
Their story is framed as a flashback from the present day, five years after graduation. Farhan fakes a heart attack to abort a plane because he gets a call from Chatur saying Rancho has come. Raju leaves in a hurry without any pants getting the same call. They both realize Chatur only came because he made a deal with Rancho to see who would be more successful, him or Rancho. All three of them search for Rancho. They come to a village and find out that Rancho was actually a gardener's son and when his father died, a rich man took him in. The man's son who is the real Rancho (Javed Jaffrey) and their Rancho's real name is Chhote. When Rancho couldn't pass his exams, his father not wanting him to fail in life sent Chhotte as Rancho to get his son a degree and leave. In which he did, the two interrupt Pia's wedding and take her along to find Rancho. They find he is a teacher much to Chatur's joy that he is more successful than Rancho. Also that he will be more richer when he signs a deal with Phunsukh Wangdu, a world famous scientist. But everyone realizes that Rancho is actually Phunsukh Wangdu himself. Much to Chatur's shock and dismay. The movie ends with Rancho and Pia kissing hard and Pia explains Rancho that while kissing lip to lip , nose doesn't comes in between and they get married.
