The key stats explaining why Eric Bailly’s return could be a game-changer for Man Utd

In the last few weeks United boss Jose Mourinho has tried a number of central defensive combinations, but has never had Eric Bailly to call upon, who has been sidelined with a troublesome ankle injury since their 1-0 defeat to Chelsea last November.

Jones and Bailly Man Utd’s best CB partnership?

For starters, the 23-year-old Ivorian international brings presence to their defence, which has looked a lot more calmer with him around. The aforementioned Smalling made more defensive errors in the Premier League than any United player last season (3), while Bailly, though he can be prone to rashness, did not record a single one.
So far this season, Bailly has featured across eight league outings, starting alongside Jones in seven of those contests with United playing a back-three in their 1-0 win over Spurs at Old Trafford. United won six of those and lost once (the aforementioned match at Stamford Bridge).
What’s more, across United’s first four Premier League matches, the centre-back pairing of Jones and Bailly went 312 minutes before conceding. This gave the team a platform from which to rack up some impressive wins. We saw several United games earlier on this season follow a similar pattern involving an early Red Devils goal, solidity and control for the middle part of the game, followed by some lethal counter-attacking toward the end while the opponents’ energy and morale was diminished.
The result in those opening three games was back-to-back 4-0 wins for United, followed by a 2-0 victory at home to Leicester – and the foundation of Jones and Bailly was key.

More importantly, United have kept six league clean sheets with Bailly on the pitch and conceded just three times, or 0.38 goals per game. If you want to break that down a little further, it’s one every 240 minutes.
A proactive defender, Bailly is always looking to be on the frontfoot, winning 12 of his 17 aerial duels and both his attempted take-ons (2/2) this Premier League season to date. Also, since joining from Villarreal in the summer of 2016, his passing has come to the fore, and that’s been evident this season.
In the Premier League he boasts a 86% passing accuracy having successfully completed 293 of his 341 attempted passes. Moreover, a good centre-back also needs to engage with their opposition while getting stuck in, and Bailly in his few league appearances has done exactly that. None of United’s other central defenders average more tackles won per 90 than Bailly (0.8 who’s also producing 1.6 interceptions, 0.63 blocks and 5.6 clearances per game.
Considering what Bailly offers and how long he’s been away, his return, pardon the clich?, will feel like a new signing. And it could not come at a more pivotal moment with United fighting on three fronts as they look to finish this season on a strong note.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says the club's youth players are getting the chance to train with the first team squad on a regular basis.

Promising youngsters such as Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes have been training with the first team recently - following in the footsteps of Scott McTominay, who has stepped up to be part of Mourinho's squad and featured in 12 senior games so far this season.

Speaking in his press conference at the Aon Training Complex ahead of Saturday's Emirates FA Cup tie at Huddersfield Town, the boss was asked about whether players such as Chong and Gomes, who are performing well in the younger age groups, will get a chance to be promoted to the senior team.

"It depends what you mean by promotion," Jose said. "If, by promotion, you mean that they are training regularly with us, then they have been promoted for a long time.

"Scott McTominay didn?t arrive here from the moon. Before he came to the first team, he trained with us many times last season. He came with us in pre-season and then we realised that Andreas Pereira was leaving in the summer, so we decided: 'Okay, we are not going to sign another player, we have Scott McTominay ready to step up'."

The FA Cup fifth-round tie against the Terriers at the John Smith's Stadium could present another opportunity for a youngster to be a part of the first team, after 17-year-old starlet Gomes appeared as a substitute against Yeovil Town in the last round and received praise from Mourinho and captain Michael Carrick afterwards.

"Maybe I will have one of the kids on the bench," the boss said. "The objective of not having a squad that is too big is exactly to be open for this. For example, this week we didn't have a few players because of injuries and small things that I wanted to protect.

"All these kids, they trained with us. Not today [Friday] because they [the Under-23s] play today but, yesterday and before yesterday, they trained with us."

Chong might get his first chance..but bit less likely that he would play tonight vs Huddersfield given that he played vs chelsea yesterday for u23s

De Gea: ?Manchester United?s history and the players that have played for this club is incredible. To succeed here you need to be calm, mentally strong and have a big personality. I?ve been lucky enough to deal with the pressure and overcome the tough spells.? #mufc [bein]
