AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has pledged to replace Juventus-bound Andrea Pirlo with a "top class player". Pirlo has decided to leave the newly-crowned Serie A champions after ten years at the San Siro with his contract due to expire at the end of the season.
Milan are already on the lookout for a suitable replacement for the Italian playmaker and are targeting a big name signing to please the fans.
"Milan have always played with top class players, we will replace Pirlo with a top class player," Allegri told the press on Saturday.
Pirlo, 32, is expected to join Juventus on a three-year contract but his agent has confirmed the deal is not yet done. "He still has some details to sort out, but I think that Andrea Pirlo is heading for Juventus," said Tullio Tinti. "He'll make a decision in the next few days, but Juve is really the leading candidate."
Milan end their season on Sunday with a game against Udinese and the Rossoneri are expected to run the rule over Zebrette midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah, although Allegri would not confirm his club's interest. "Asamoah is a good player, but I'd rather not talk about him," he said.

Udinese claimed the point they needed in a 0-0 draw against champions AC Milan to make certain of their place in the Champions League next season. The Bianconeri played out a goalless draw in the final round of matches, meaning Lazio's 4-2 victory at 10-man Lecce was not enough to take fourth spot.

    Inter conquers space, too

Believe it or not if you surf the NASA website today, you might bump into Inter. The site is www.spaceflight.nasa.gov</SPAN />, and the person gyrating on board the International Space Station in the Nerazzurri shirt is 54-year-old Paolo Nespoli from Milan. He's an Inter fan and a spaceman - or to put it technically, a flight engineer - and has been part of this incredible experience since December. The mission, called MagISStra, will come to an end in a few hours. Paolo has been in touch via twitter every minute of the way and the shirt he's wearing was a present given to him by Inter for his birthday on 6 April. We've always said that Inter knows no boundaries and has fans in every corner of the earth: now all that's left for us to conquer is space.

THIAGO SILVA is Serie A Player of the Season 2010-11

Goal.com name our top three stand-out performers from Serie A in 2010-11 and declare our winner. Have your say below...

In 2010-11, there were many Serie A stars who saw their shining light fadeaway, but many more who proved that their talents still burn bright. While champions Inter suffered collectively with few exceptions, there were stand-out performers among all of the top half-dozen sides.

Celebrated new signings Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho joined team-mate Alexandre Pato on 14 goals for the season as AC Milan clinched the title, while Samuel Eto'o continued to impress for the former champions. Napoli clinched a Champions League spot thanks in part to the performances of the likes of Ezequiel Lavezzi and ChristianMaggio, and Udinese took fourth as Alexis Sanchez grabbed headlines and attention across Europe. Lazio and Roma will be in the Europa League next season, and they will have the displays of Anderson Hernanes and Francesco Totti respectively to thank for their participation on the continent.

Below are Goal.com's three nominees for Serie A Player of the Season in alphabetical order. We then cast our vote at the bottom before leaving it up to you, the readers, to have your say.

    1. EDINSON CAVANI | Striker
    Age: 24
    Appearances: 35
    Goals/Assists: 26/6
    Cards:

    6 1

Cavani arrived in Italy in January 2007 when Palermo snapped him up from Danubio, and after three-and-a-half years of loyal service in Sicily he made the move to Napoli last summer looking to give his career the kick it needed to become a big star. Twelve months on, the Uruguayan is one of the most spoken-about strikers in Europe.

His haul of 26 league goals was the main reason behind the Vesuviani's elevation from nearly men to Champions League competitors, as he fed superbly off the intelligent play of Lavezzi and Marek Hamsik to chalk up three hat-tricks and four braces. With his movement in behind defences proving almost impossible to counteract, he earned a permanent stay, a five-year contract, and the attention of several top clubs.

    2. ANTONIO DI NATALE | Striker
    Age: 33
    Appearances:
    36
    Goals/Assists: 28/7
    Cards:

    3 0

In his first five years in Udine, Di Natale chalked up 57 goals as he largely played as a second striker, tasked with using his individual skill and intelligent running for the betterment of the side. But in the last two Serie A campaigns the Neapolitan has exploded, doubling his club tally to become capocannoniere in successive seasons.

Leading an Udinese side who reached the Champions League play-off spot, he notched three hat-tricks amongst his 28 league goals, but they only tell part of the story behind his contribution to the cause. His ability to pull markers away from their central positions helped to open up many an opportunity for team-mates, as Di Natale revelled whether playing off a front man or leading the line himself.

    3. THIAGO SILVA | Defender Age: 26 Appearances: 33
    Goals/Assists: 1/1
    Cards:

    1 0

Quite possibly the best defender in the world today, ThiagoSilva turned in an excellent maiden campaign in the peninsula in 2009-10 and got even better this term. The Brazilian provided therock around which Milan's superb defence was built as they conceded only 24 goals all season - 15 less than any other team in the league.

With an ability to read the play like nobody else in the modern game, he has showcased his superb aerial ability, two good feet, strength, anticipation and positioning at grounds all over the country, almost without fail. And so good is he that he carries out all of this almost entirely free of foul means, picking up only a single booking in the entire season. Truly one of a kind in 21st century football.

GOAL.COM'S SERIE A PLAYER OF THE SEASON
    - Thiago Silva -
    In five words:

    Amazing anticipation, league-winning rock

    Season highlight:

Snuffed out Inter home and away as Milan grabbed the initiative in the title race, with his showing in the 10-man win in November particularly excellent.
