The best since Baresi - AC Milan's Thiago Silva proves he's a modern day great

Lauded by Pippo Inzaghi this week as a 'once in a century' player, the Brazilian has made massive strides in his time in Italy as he establishes himself as one of the world's best

As AC Milan push their trolley around Calcio’s huge supermarket this summer, there will be no need to so much as browse down the aisle marked ‘Defenders’. Having headed straight for the bargain bin to sign Philippe Mexes and Taye Taiwo, they have also secured the presence of a player Pippo Inzaghi this week called “the best defender in the world” for another five years. By handing a contract extension to Brazilian centre-back Thiago Silva, they’ve already made the best summer signing of the lot.

It’s now two-and-a-half years since the No.33 first put pen-to-paper with the club, and in that time he has quickly developed into one of the finest purchases of the Silvio Berlusconi era. AC Milan beat the links of Inter, Chelsea and Manchester City to secure his signature, paying €10 million (8.7m) for his services in December 2008 despite having already filled their two extracomunitario positions in the squad for the season with Andriy Shevchenko and Tabare Viudez.

    THE DIFFERENCE MAKER

But the club were proved justified in taking the player away from Fluminense early in order to beat others to the punch when he slotted straight into their line-up the following August. Alongside Alessandro Nesta, who was returning from an entire season out injured, Silva seemed to be taking everything in his stride – though he recently revealed that he played with a great amount of fear throughout his first season as an AC Milan first-teamer. It certainly did not show. With strength, pace, durability, a good touch, great heading ability and a magnificent brain, he more than covered up for any nagging doubts he may have had about himself and in doing so won admirers on the Curva Sud very quickly indeed.

In 2010-11 he has gotten better and better, and was last week named Goal.com’s Serie A Player of the Season. Having gradually assumed the role of defensive leader from Nesta, the Brazilian has taken to every task presented to him with relish. Naturally right footed, he has made a mockery of the inability of so many stoppers – even top class ones – to switch between the two centre-back positions. With Nesta providing less versatility, it has been Silva who has played away from his natural space on the right of centre for two whole seasons, yet you wouldn’t know it for a second. He was even trialled as a defensive midfielder in early 2011, to decent effect.

As time has gone by over the past two years there has been a fairly major decline in Nesta’s mobility and reliability, yet you’d be forgiven for not noticing. This is maybe the biggest compliment you can pay to Thiago Silva. After his season out with back trouble, many were surprised at how well ‘Sandrino’ returned. But while it’s true that Nesta has done very well, he can often be found gasping for air while his partner in crime remains as sharp as a tack.

Since the turn of the year in particular, there has been an appreciable drop in the Italian’s level of effectiveness, but this is increasingly masked by the brilliance of the Brazilian. His unparalleled vision is a joy to behold, with his ability to anticipate the play two steps ahead of anyone else often leading to him bailing his side out. This is not to detract from Nesta as such – for a 35-year-old with a poor injury record, he has done extremely well to stay at the top for so long – but simply to highlight just how complete Silva has quickly become.

"Thiago belongs to the elite group of players who are born maybe once in a century."
    - Pippo Inzaghi

The next time you watch AC Milan on TV, spend a few minutes if you can following how he reads the game, and if you can get yourself to one of their matches at any point then you it will be even more apparent just how good he is. More and more often he can be found drifting from his left centre-back position into a near right-back slot to cover danger long before it has been detected by the likes of Nesta, Daniele Bonera, Ignazio Abate et al. He has also made light work of the club’s issues at left-back by helping Luca Antonini out of a number of tight spots at the back.

Still only 26-years-old, it could be argued that Silva is still to reach his peak, which is a frightening thought. Already he is a defensive monster, the likes of which there are few in entire decades – particularly in the modern game – and there have even been speculative reports in the Spanish press over the last 24 hours that he could be a target for Barcelona. Though you could clearly see why the European champions might want to sign him, AC Milan simply won’t let it happen. With arguably their best centre-back since Franco Baresi in tow, their defence over the next few years can surely only get better.

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti believes there is a 60% chance that Udinese winger Alexis Sanchez will join the club this summer but said a move for Palermo's Javier Pastore is impossible. Chile international Sanchez, 22, has been linked with a number of top clubs around Europe, but Manchester City now appear to have given up their pursuit and Inter and Juventus look to be leading the race for his signature.
Moratti told Inter Channel: "It's hard to give a precise reply at a moment in which we are trying to figure out if the clubs will sell, how they will sell, the prices, wages and whether certain exchanges will be able to be made. However, let's say that the player with whom we are speaking, and I don't know the odds of our success, is certainly Sanchez, because we've been talking about it for a long time. Also because he's a player with many qualities and because we've opened a certain kind of discussion with Udinese. Let's say not that he's definitely coming but [that] there is a 60% chance that he will arrive."
Inter were among the clubs said to have expressed an interest in Argentina playmaker Pastore but, with Palermo demanding €50 million for his services, it appears Moratti is not willing to enter the bidding.
"We all know that Pastore is excellent, he also played well against us in the Coppa Italia final, but I don't think that negotiations are possible," he said.
Inter have been linked with Roma vice-captain Daniele De Rossi, who has a lifelong association with the city and is considered an icon of the club, and Moratti was equivocal about his hopes of signing the player.
"De Rossi, in my opinion, is not a bad idea at all, but I don't believe we have initiated any kind of negotiations with Roma, also because the club is going through a re-organisation," he added. "I do not think there are such contacts to be able to study what can be done, and then there's the fact that the player is tied to his club and especially the city, but I too consider him a player of great quality and character, and therefore I don't think for him to have an experience with us would be a bad thing..."

Tottenham midfielder Wilson Palacios is waiting to hear whether he will be able to seal a move to Napoli. Palacios has been used sparingly at White Hart Lane this season after the emergence of Brazilian Sandro and could drop further down the pecking order if the club seal a summer move for West Ham's Scott Parker.
Now, the Honduras midfielder is hopeful that he will be allowed to move to Italy and play Champions League football next season.
"The next few days will be key for my future. There are advanced negotiations but I will await news from London," he told the Daily Mirror.
Palacios arrived at White Hart Lane from Wigan for 12 million in 2009 and, although reports suggest Napoli are willing to offer 7 million, Spurs are holding out for more.

Napoli midfielder Michele Pazienza will complete his move to Juventus in the next few days, according to his agent. Pazienza, who joined Napoli in 2008 from Fiorentina, becomes a free agent this summer. The 28-year-old is also a reported target of Italian champions AC Milan.
"The deal with Juventus is done,'' said Pazienza4s agent Vincenzo D4Ippolito to Corriere dello Sport. "Pazienza will undergo a medical later this week.''
Pazienza made 31 league appearances for Napoli this season to help the club finish third in Serie A and qualify for the Champions League.
Juventus have already strengthened their squad with the signing of veteran midfielder Andrea Pirlo and Sampdoria's Reto Ziegler. Both players joined the Turin outfit on a free transfer last month
