Barcelona 5-0 Mallorca: Messi hits hat-trick, Cuenca scores first senior goal & Dani Alves nets cracker as champions claim resounding win

The Argentine maestro takes his goalscoring tally to 199 in all competitions as the Blaugrana ease past Caparros' side with Isaac Cuenca scoring in his second appearance

Lionel Messi answered his critics with a superbly taken hat-trick inside the opening half-hour at Camp Nou as Barcelona thrashed Mallorca 5-0.
The Argentine striker had gone three matches without scoring evoking criticism for his recent performances but Barcelona’s No. 10 responded in emphatic fashion.

Messi’s first came courteous of a penalty which he thumped home leaving the goalkeeper no chance, and the Argentine turned in his second of the night just six minutes later.

Goal number 199 followed when Dani Alves’ inch-perfect cross was turned home on the half-volley.

Isaac Cuenca added a fourth with his first senior goal and a stunning Dani Alves strike late on helped lift Barcelona to the top of La Liga ahead of Real Madrid’s clash against Sociedad.

Barcelona dominated the early possession but it was Mallorca who came closest to taking the lead when Joao Victor burst onto a low cross only to divert his shot wide of the target.

And Mallorca were left ruing that miss when they found themselves a goal down not long afterwards when Emilio Nsue handled inside the penalty area giving Messi the chance to end his goal draught. The Argentine steadied himself before converting the spot-kick in emphatic fashion rifling the ball into the top corner of the net.

Youngster Cuenca then tormented Pedro Bigas before sending a devilish cross to the far post which Adriano volleyed, somewhat fortunately, into the path of Messi to double Barcelona's lead 21 minutes in.

Messi had completed his hat-trick inside 30 minutes with a beautifully taken half-volley after Dani Alves swung a cross into the Argentine's path who struck the ball perfectly with his left foot moving his Barcelona record to 199 goals in all competitions.

Barcelona started the second half in similar fashion and had their fourth of the night when Isaac Cuenca rounded Aouate before hammering in his first senior goal following Adriano’s intricately placed through-ball.

There was still time for Dani Alves to add a fifth goal when he attempted an audacious shot from distance which dipped viciously below the crossbar to ensure it was a five-star performance for Guardiola’s men.

Mallorca failed to pressurise the Barcelona defence as the game sauntered to an end with Joaquin Caparros turning his attention to the match against Sevilla in pursuit of his first win as Mallorca’s coach.

Guardiola’s side will now look ahead to the Champions League as they face a difficult trip to Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday night.

Real Sociedad 0-1 Real Madrid: Neat Gonzalo Higuain finish enough for Jose Mourinho's men to go top of La Liga

A ninth minute strike from the Argentine was sufficient for the capital giants to collect maximum points in San Sebastian, and secure a sixth straight league win

A composed first-half effort from Gonzalo Higuain proved enough to help Real Madrid emerge from San Sebastian with a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad in Saturday's Primera Division clash.
The forward continued his rich vein of form by deftly dinking the ball into the net from inside the area, and although Sociedad rallied in the second period, Madrid's path to the three points was never truly in danger.

Visiting coach Jose Mourinho opted to start Higuain in attack and the striker immediately repaid the faith shown by his boss by opening the scoring on nine minutes.

As Sociedad attempted to remain compact, Fabio Coentrao moved forward from left-back and slipped a neat pass into the path of the Argentine, who, as Claudio Bravo approached, neatly scooped the ball over his diving body and into the net.

The Basque side's game plan had clearly been to contain and attempt to hit Madrid on the counter, but their efforts had been outdone, and at times in the opening exchanges their suspect offside trap threatened to become their downfall.

Angel Di Maria forced Bravo into a diving save to his left, while Cristiano Ronaldo meandered through the defence with a series of step-overs, but lost control at an inopportune moment and the chance in front of goal was gone.

Madrid remained dominant, and the opening 45 minutes was almost exclusively played in Sociedad's half, as the hosts struggled to exert any kind of influence on proceedings.

But, for all of Madrid's control, another goal was not forthcoming, and despite having just 30 per cent of possession going into the interval, Sociedad remained in the game.

And the second half offered Philippe Montanier's side a chink of light as Madrid appeared to relax and allow their opponents breathing space for the first time in the contest.

The ball was now equally shared between the sides, and Sociedad sensed an opportunity. Carlos Vela strode forward to fire in a shot that warmed the gloves of Iker Casillas, then substitute Antoine Griezmann forced Spain's No.1 into a diving save low to his left.

Madrid realised that the result was far from certain, and responded in kind. Alvaro Arbeloa dragged an effort wide of the target, then Higuain chose the wrong option in attempting to find Ronaldo when a shooting opportunity looked clear.

Sergio Ramos then squandered an opening, sliding in to hook the ball wide from the edge of the six-yard box, but a second goal was not needed; Madrid collected the win, and moved back ahead of Barcelona to the top of La Liga, with Levante playing on Sunday.

Real Madrid - Osasuna Preview: Hosts aim to maintain 100 per cent home record

Jose Mourinho's men will be looking to continue their impressive form at home to Jose Luis Mendilibar's side, who themselves will come into the game high on confidence

    PROBABLE LINE-UPS

    OSASUNA

    Raitala, Lolo, Sergio, Bertran
    Damia, Raul Garcia, Nekounam, Punal

Real Madrid will have Nuri Sahin in their matchday squad, but Ricardo Carvalho is still not fully match fit while Fabio Coentrao is a major doubt after picking up a muscular strain in the 2-0 win over Lyon in midweek.

With fellow left-back Marcelo also ruled out, Alvaro Arbeloa is expected to return to the starting line-up after recovering from a niggle, although Kaka is likely to sit out, with Mesut Ozil resuming his role in attacking midfield.

Lassana Diarra could continue at right-back due to Madrid's defensive problems, while Gonzalo Higuain is favourite to be handed the lone striker role after missing the club's Champions League victory on Wednesday.

Jose Luis Mendilibar will be looking to make minimum changes from the side who beat La Liga's former leaders Levante last weekend. However, the coach will be forced into replacing the suspended Alvaro Cejudo, with Damia a candidate to take his place in midfield.

Nuri Sahin included in Real Madrid squad for Osasuna clash

The Turkish midfielder, who arrived from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, could be in line to make his debut after being called up for the weekend following a long injury lay-off

Real Madrid have announced on their official website that summer signing Nuri Sahin will be in the matchday squad for Sunday's home encounter against Osasuna.
The Turkish international joined the Spanish giants from Borussia Dortmund, yet he is still to make his debut for Madrid.

Sahin has been suffering with a knee injury since arriving at the club and is expected to be named on the substitutes bench for the game at the Bernabeu.

The 23-year-old's return to fitness will come as a big boost for Jose Mourinho who has seen his squad blighted by injury in recent weeks.

Alvaro Arbeloa and Tomas Meijas also made the squad although there is no place for the injured Kaka, Ricardo Carvalho and Marcelo. Hamit Altintop and Esteban Granero have also been omitted.
