Germany defeat harms Turkey's case
Goals from Mario Gomez and Thomas Müller followed by a Bastian Scheinwsteiger penalty maintained Germany's flawless record in UEFA EURO 2012 Group A, with Hakan Balta on target for Turkey.
Turkey might have sealed second place in the section and a play-off place in Istanbul, but were chasing the game after Gomez put the visitors ahead on the break. Müller's strike did not kill off the home side's resistance, with Hakan Balta's goal 11 minutes from the end restoring some hope, but the writing was on the wall when Schweinsteiger finished from the spot.
Turkey looked to go for the throat from the off, with Hamit Altıntop, Arda Turan and Selçuk Inan eager to provide the ammunition for in-form striker Burak Yılmaz. Selçuk set up Altıntop for a fifth-minute chance but Manuel Neuer swatted it wide. Hiddink's men were eager to make it a physical encounter but Germany's passing proved to be irresistible.
After Selçuk failed to make the most of a chance, the ball moved at lightning speed upfield and the hitherto invisible Gomez finished to make it 1-0 on 35 minutes.
Germany were to see more of the ball after the break, with Turkey forced to play increasingly on the counterattack. Burak looked to profit from one such break on 58 minutes but could not outpace Jérôme Boateng. Gomez and Müller had further opportunities, however, and the latter made it 2-0 with a shot from just outside the box as Neuer's long clearance caused chaos in the Turkey defence.
The 50,000-strong crowd were revived after Hakan Balta converted Gökhan Gönül's cross, and the closing minutes looked set to be tough for Germany, but Gökhan's foul on Müller then set up Schweinsteiger to kill the game off when he converted from the spot. Turkey now trail second-ranked Belgium by a point going into their final game against Azerbaijan on Tuesday.

Czech Republic 0-2 Spain: Juan Mata & Xabi Alonso seal comfortable victory for tournament holders
Spain were comfortable winners on Friday evening in Prague after first half goals from Juan Mata and Xabi Alonso sealed a 2-0 victory over the Czech Republic in their Euro 2012 qualifier.
The world champions took the lead early on through Mata after Xavi dissected the home side's defence with a delightful through ball. The Chelsea winger still had a lot to do and he took his finish well, calmly slotting past his club team-mate Petr Cech.
Xabi Alonso added a second midway through the first half after another wonderful assist, this time from David Silva. The Manchester City man picked up possession and drove into the area, before finding Alonso at the back post with an exquisite pass with the outside of his left foot. With the keeper wrong-footed, Alonso had the simplest of tasks, placing the ball into the back of the net from 10 yards out.
Spain looked extremely comfortable as the game approached half-time and Xavi came close to making it three with a wicked free-kick that dipped just over the bar.
The closest Czech Republic came to scoring in the opening 45 minutes was a tame Tomas Rosicky effort that drifted miserably past Iker Casillas' right-hand post.
Fernando Torres had little impact on the game and was replaced by David Villa on the hour mark.
Minutes after Spain made their attacking substitution the Czech Republic followed suit, replacing Milan Baros with the young Tomas Pekhart. The former Tottenham player, an imposing figure at 6 ft 4in, was promoted to the senior team after impressing during the U-21 European Championships this summer.
Soon after, Czech Republic midfielder Tomas Hubschman received a straight red card after 69 minutes for a horrible challenge on Xabi Alonso that led to the Real Madrid midfielder being replaced by Javi Martinez.
The game petered out somewhat following Hubschman's dismissal, with the Czechs struggling to cope with Spain's numerical advantage.
The visitors came close to scoring a third on a number of occasions. Martinez was unfortunate to see his effort trickle past the post after bursting through the heart of the Czech Republic defence and again came close just minutes later, only to see his deflected effort cannon back off the crossbar with Cech well-beaten.
Spain had already secured a place in the finals next summer before the game this evening but the Czechs' own qualification remains in the balance following this defeat. With Del Bosque resting a number of players Michal Bilek will be disappointed at the manner of his team's defeat this evening, with his team looking second best throughout the game.

France 3-0 Albania: Loic Remy stars as Laurent Blanc's much-changed side collect easy victory
France maintained their place at the top of Group D with a comfortable 3-0 win over Albania in Euro 2012 qualifying at the Stade de France, their biggest win of the campaign.
Florent Malouda opened the scoring in the 11th minute before Loic Remy doubled the home team's lead seven minutes before the half-time whistle. Anthony Reveillere completed the rout on 67 minutes to ensure victory for the 2000 European Championship winners.
Laurent Blanc's men face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday, knowing that a draw will be enough to finish ahead of their Balkan rivals to claim a place in next summer's competition, which is to be held jointly by Poland and Ukraine.
The home nation started brightly and were a goal to the good on 11 minutes, courtesy of Florent Malouda's strike. Loic Remy's perseverance down the right wing saw the Marseille man steal the ball off Kristi Vangeli before crossing the ball for Chelsea's Malouda who hit the back of the net via a slight deflection.
On 25 minutes, France nearly doubled their lead yet Adil Rami could only head wide from close-range after Yohan Cabaye's inviting corner into the penalty area - a poor miss from the Valencia centre-half.
However, Blanc's side did not have to wait long until they added a second when Remy scored on 38 minutes. Samir Nasri's wonderful play showed great strength to fend off several challenges on the edge of the box before sliding the ball to Remy to finish from a tight angle to give France a comfortable lead at the half-time interval.
The result was put beyond doubt on 67 minutes when Anthony Reveillere grabbed his first international goal to make it 3-0. The impressive Marvin Martin slid a precise through ball to the Lyon full-back who beat Saimir Ujkani at his near-post as his nation took all three points to return to the top of the group, a point ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who had defeated Luxembourg 5-0 earlier on in the evening.
While France will be hoping to avoid defeat at home to Bosnia and Herzegovina in four days' time, Albania will be looking to end an unsuccessful qualifying campaign on a high with victory over Romania.
