You are right. Spain uses their full backs to use the width of the pitch rather than the wingers. If Puyol was there as the centre back along with Pique , then Ramos could have attacked more as the right full back in the same way Jordi Alba does on the left side. Then there would not have been a need to bring some one like Navas as a substitute. They could have tried Llorente as a striker(atleast for 20-30 minutes) with crosses from Ramos and Alba.
