Biopics offer the toughest of challenges for the thinking filmmaker. It's all the more challenging if the subject is a living, global icon like Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook. The Social Network by David Fincher cannot be classified as biopic, in the broader sense of the genre, because it only deals with a phase of Zuckerberg's life. The phase, however, defines the geeky and maverick young man in what he would represent for the 'conventional' world around him, later. The film's greatest strength is that it doesn't tilt towards adoration or glorification of its lead player. It's a balanced take that doesn't hesitate to show the iconic Zuckerberg in all his insecurities and edgy conflicts (the film is based on the Ben Mezrich book The Accidental Billionaires).
The film starts in Harvard University in 2003 when Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg in a terrific performance) breaks up with his girlfriend Erica Albright (Rooney Mara) and in a bit of a drunken vengeance, creates 'FaceMash', a page where the students could compare the 'Hotness Quotient' of two female students. In the process, he humiliates Albright and ends up with probation as punishment. The traffic that FaceMash generates that night catches the attention of the Winklevoss brothers (popular, identical twins in the university -- both played by Armie Hammer) who want Zuckerberg to work for them on a social networking site they plan to launch.
Zuckerberg commits but dodges them, while simultaneously launching his own networking site --The Facebook -- with the help of friend Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield). The Twins are devastated that their idea has been stolen even as Zuckerberg and Saverin go big and start looking for angel investors, leading up to a meeting with Napster co-founder Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake) who effects a change in the business model and work ethics of the site. And a lot more.
The film takes off from there on how success, and acceptance by a world that has been cold to his brilliance, impact Zuckerberg's worldview and even his reading of friends who backed him when he started out. He's not a cut-throat business guy and comes across as impressionable (he identifies with the daring, unconventional ways of Parker) and a misfit in the commercial space that he inhabits. There are moments in the film where he emerges as a jealous, complex geek while in others, he's a confused, yet original thinker who just can't see commercial value of his product.
Fincher brings these inconsistencies forth in a slow-deal, grounded style (a diversion from his work in films like Seven and Fight Club and more in tune with the style in Zodiac) that's brilliantly complemented by Aaron Sorkin's writing (Sample this -- "A guy who makes a nice chair doesn't owe money to everyone who has ever built a chair".) The lawsuit hearings are shot with unhurried finesse and even the seemingly arbit characters (the associate of Zuckerberg's counsel, for instance) lend depth to the proceedings. The film has A-line performances from all the major leads and has a final sequence that's a masterstroke, deftly capturing relationships and what they mean for us, in our times of chats, tweets, Wall posts and friend requests. The Social Network is work of integrity and sheer, original brilliance. It has terrific writing, a master filmmaker in full flow and a supremely effective cast. Must. Watch.
