How can a smartphone stand out from the sea of options available today? Simple: over-the-top attention to detail, build quality and a fantastic screen that blows you away with eye-popping colours and deep blacks.

The Wave II (or S8530) is powered by Samsung?s own Bada operating system and it is their second phone on the Bada platform after the Wave. It?s not a small or light phone by any stretch, but it is quite slim at 11.5mm and feels very solid and well put together. The screen occupies most of the front, with chrome answer/end buttons and a large central button just below. Along the side, it has the buttons for the camera shutter, lock and volume.

In many ways, the Bada OS is similar to Android. Like Android, Bada has a notification area on top of the screen. It also has multiple, customisable home screens. Even the homescreen wallpaper moves from side to side as you swipe through the multiple screens.

There are a lot of appealing things about the Wave II. The screen is not AMOLED, but the Super Clear LCD offers excellent colours and richness. The liberal use of metal panels gives it a very solid feel. Multimedia playback is excellent (especially DivX movies, which playback without any conversion). The new T9-Trace input method allows you to type a work by tracing a path on the keyboard (similar to Swype on Android & Symbian^3). And thanks to the 1Ghz ARM Cortex A8 processor and dedicated graphics chipset, there is a lot of power under the hood for the nice animations and everything runs along without any hiccups or lags.

Call quality is excellent and the large 1500mAh battery will surely last you a day even with heavy usage of email, music, calls and messages. The camera takes good pictures in daylight, and the bright LED flash also helps at night, though as expected, some noise does creep into low light shots.

All the most-used applications are available for Bada, but if you are always on the lookout for new, interesting, lesser-known apps, then you should look elsewhere. It?s no secret that that the pace of app development on Bada is nowhere that of Android or iPhone. And this is the one biggest drawback of this platform. The number of applications is growing of course, but if you buy this phone, will you be keeping it long enough to enjoy the benefits?

The MRP of the Wave II is Rs 20,900, but the actual market price is closer to Rs 17,000. At that price, the Wave II is an excellent option for those looking a high-performance smartphone with a fantastic screen and great build quality. However, if apps will become a sore point, it would be wiser to go for Android. Motorola?s Defy is available for about the same price. It also has a 3.7-inch screen and it is water proof to boot.

Mobile Number Portability is the way for consumers.MNP is something that consumers are really vouching for due to issues with Unique Porting code.
Over 38.33 lakh mobile users have opted to disconnect their telecom service providers within just five weeks of the launch of the number portability (MNP) facility that allows subscribers to retain their phone numbers while switching to another operator.
According to latest data on mobile porting requests released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), subscribers in Gujarat and Karnataka top the charts since the nationwide launch of MNP on January 21. The service was first launched in Haryana in late November before mobile number portability emerged as an all-India phenomenon.

Within the metros, if porting requests are an indicator of the situation, there are more disgruntled customers in Delhi (1.76 lakh) than Mumbai (1.36 lakh) or Kolkata (96,000). However, it may also be the case that there was more awareness in the national Capital compared to the other two state capitals.

Trai has so far refrained from providing service provider-wise porting requests. As a proportion of the subscriber base, the proportion of subscribers opting for number portability so far is 0.5 per cent. At the end of January 2011, there were 77.18 wireless phone users across India.

However, operators need not necessarily act upon all requests. As a result, the regulator said it was constantly monitoring the implementation of number portability, something that was held back for several years.

It is observed that the primary reasons for rejection of port request are Incorrect Unique Porting Code, non-completion of 90 days, existing contractual obligations and outstanding dues.

Opera Software has released updated versions of its Mini and Mobile smartphone browsers, and adapted the browsers' interface for tablets, the Norwegian company said on Tuesday.
New features include a share button, which allows users to post messages on Twitter and Facebook. The updates feature improved scrolling and panning performance, and zooming has also been improved: it now makes use of pinch-to-zoom on all devices that support it.
In the tablet versions, the navigation buttons are at the top of the screen, rather than at the bottom as in the smartphone versions, Opera said.
The Opera Mini 6 browser is available for phones that can run J2ME Java applets and for smartphones running the Android, BlackBerry and Symbian S60 operating systems.
Opera Mobile 11 supports HTML5 and is available for smartphones running Android and Symbian. Experimental versions are also available for devices running MeeGo and Maemo, as is one for tablets running Windows 7, according to Opera.
Opera Mini uses a proxy server to compress and reformat Web pages before they are transmitted to the phone. Using compression speeds up downloads and means subscribers without unlimited data contracts can save money. Opera Mobile, on the other hand, works like a traditional browser, without using a proxy server.
Opera didn't release versions of the browsers for Apple's iPhone and iPad on Tuesday, but owners of those two devices should stay tuned, an Opera spokeswoman said via e-mail.
Opera is hoping to get its browser in other devices too. On Monday, the company announced at the IP&TV World Forum in London that it will unveil a new version of its Opera for Devices SDK 3.0, which is its embeddable browser engine for TVs.
The new version comes with a totally re-designed rendering engine to improve performance. There is also improved HTML5 compliance, and HTML5 video integrated from day one on some platforms, Opera said.
