    Tamil Nadu namukku pani thannu......

'Thiruvananthapuram faces high risk from Koodankulam plant'

Thiruvananthapuram faces high risk from Kudankulam nuclear plant and people of the city will have to be evacuated if an explosion occurs at Kudankulam nuclear plant, T. Shivaji Rao, Director, Environmental Studies, GITAM University, Visakhapatnam, has said.

If the wind flows from South East during an accident, Thiruvanathapuram district would be exposed to high levels of radiation and lakhs of people would be forced to vacate their homes, offices, agriculture fields and industries and run for safety within two days of the accident.

They would be able to return only after 10 years, that too after decontamination of the area, he said.

Dr. Rao said that similar situation would arise in Tamil Nadu, and urban areas such Tirunelveli and Palayamkotta would be hit if the wind is blowing in that direction.

In an email to The Hindu, Dr. Rao said that several questions ought to be asked by the people before the expert committee on Koodankulam nuclear plant.

These would include questions whether the Nuclear Power Corporation and the Central government had prepared environment assessment reports including risk analysis and disaster management plans to deal with all kinds of accidents including terrorist attacks.

Questions also needed to be asked as demarcation of emergency planning zones and preparedness to evacuate lakhs of people in case of accident.

The economic costs of damage and decommissioning of the reactors also needed to be worked out.

He noted that probabilistic risk assessment of nuclear reactors in United States had shown unacceptable accident frequency.

Nuclear accidents were bound to happen in India for various reasons such as lack of training and understanding of the system and poor work culture.

Passive systems incorporated as additional feature in new reactors might not help in case of internal sabotage, bombings or terrorist attacks.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS) at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) here has resumed the monthly launch of sounding rockets to conduct studies of the upper atmosphere.

A press note issued by VSSC here said RH200 sounding rockets would be launched from TERLS every month.

The first launch in the series took place on Wednesday evening.

The station had been launching sounding rockets regularly on the third Wednesday of every month. However, over the years, the launches were conducted based on need.

    Atmospheric behaviour

The station is involved in scientific experiments to study atmospheric behaviour using balloons and sounding rockets. This includes university collaboration programmes where student payload experiment programmes and rocket development programmes are undertaken, according to the press note.

The monthly launches will be of interest to scientists, students, and to the general public who can visit the Space Centre.

For permission to witness the launch, contact Ph: 0471 – 2565666.

Santhosh Pandit draws techies to Nedumangad

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sakthi Cinema in Nedumangad has been witnessing a rare phenomenon for the past one week. While the local people throng other theatres to watch the Vijay-starrer ‘Velayutham’, youths from the city arrive in large numbers at the Sakthi cinema to watch a rather unknown film.
The local people wonder why an unfamiliar actor is welcomed with thunderous claps and howls, the usual fan frenzy associated with a megastar film. A few in Nedumangad know that the film is ‘Krishnanum Radhayum’ of ‘alien star’ Santhosh Pandit which is attracting city youths to this countryside theatre, which is the only theatre in Thiruvananthapuram screening the widely-discussed film. The film, which gained popularity owing to negative publicity through YouTube, is more familiar to netizens. That may be the reason why the theatre is seeing the flow of city youths, especially techies, to watch the film. While the film is being screened in other major cities in the state amidst dance and fun, the city youth have to travel 20 km to enjoy, rather, make fun of, the self-styled superstar of Mollywood. However, the film is not doing well in Nedumangad, according to the manager of Sakthi cinema, Manoj. “The gross collection is just ` 3,500. Local people are ignoring it. But, surprisingly, youths from the city, especially Kazhakkoottam area, are coming in groups to watch the film. Most of them are techies,” he says. “But they do not seem to watch the film. They howl, use abusive words against the hero and enjoy,” he smiles. “The maximum collection was on Friday and Sunday,” he adds. ‘Krishnanum Radhayum’ will be screened this week too. “The film will be have four shows till Thursday,” he adds. Apart from acting, Santhosh did direction, script-writing, editing, music direction, lyrics and playback singing for the film. The unworthy, negative publicity he gained from YouTube proved good for Santhosh as more and more youths are vying to get the ticket. “The climax is the highlight of the film. It is difficult to comprehend the expression of hero at the time of his wife’s death,” says a comment posted on the discussion forum ‘forumkerala.com.’ The post in the pseudonym ‘Gangster’ says, “there were only 20 people in the Sakthi threatre during the show. All danced with the song ‘Oh Priyee’”. He hopes Santhosh Pandit won’t attempt a film again in future.
