Short films and documentaries are not plagued by the constraints of long feature films, film-maker Goutam Ghosh has said.
He was addressing a packed audience after inaugurating the 5th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala at Kalabhavan Theatre, Thiruvananthapuram on Friday.
He lauded the great initiative and interest of the Malayali audience in supporting good films and creativity. Despite that, no regional channel was interested in showcasing good documentaries and short-films produced in the State, Mr. Ghosh said.
This need for change was echoed by film-maker Shaji N. Karun as well who received a special Festival Catalogue during the function.
There is a need to provide a better space to view films and without a proper screen, the aesthetics and true meaning cannot be understood properly, he said.
The festivities began in the morning with screenings taking place at Kalabhavan Theatre and Trans Towers, right next door.
Despite it being a weekday, both the venues saw an impressive turn up. Works had been listed under the Short and Long Documentary Focus, and the Animation and Music Video competition categories. In addition, a sprinkling of African and Afghan entries highlighted the days morning programmes.
This years festival will feature productions by the two Film-makers in Focus, Bulgarian film-maker Adela Peeva and Amar Kanwar. The afternoon saw the first set of films by Amar Kanwar displayed, A Season Outside, To Remember, and A Night of Prophecy.
