Majeed, suhra to come alive on silver screen

KOCHI: Majeed, Vaikom Mohammed Basheer's most popular character who introduced the memorable 'Immini Balya Onnu', may soon come alive on silver screen. Mammooty has already signed an agreement with theatre personality Pramod Payyannoor for the movie 'Balyakalasakhi.'
Not only Majeed and Suhra. The movie will have a bunch of select Basheerian characters from his popular works. A host of characters, including Ettukaali Mammoonju, Ottakkannan Pocker, Sainaba, Aaanavari Raman Nair and Ponkurissu Thoma will also appear in the movie.
"What is one plus one?" You may say two. But not Majeed who does not know the basics of maths. "Immini Balya Onnu" (a big one), Majeed replies. Everyone, including the teacher, laughs at Majeed. But not Suhra. This is how the love between Majeed and Suhra blossoms in 'Balyakalasakhi.'
"Basheer had mentioned many times that 'Balyakalasakhi' has a lot of autobiographical elements in it and that he indeed is Majeed. Hence, the movie will begin with a matured Majeed who is now in Kolkata. Set in the 1940s, the movie will touch the political and cultural glory of the big city. Childhood and adolescence of the two characters unfold through Majeed's memories," said Pramod.
Maintaining the author's simple narrative style is indeed a challenge, Pramod said. ''The undercurrent of poignance is always disguised in Basheer's writing style. That makes his works a classic. We do not want to digress from the book," he said.
The movie will also have the ONVDevarajan light music "Onnini sruthy thaazhthy" rendered by P Jayachandran _ minus the background score. "Another song will be penned by Kavalam Narayana Panikker. The late P Bhaskaran's poem 'Ente thoolika' will be used as the title song," Pramod said.
The movie is produced by M B Mohsin and will start to roll by June 2011.

I remember I had tears in my eyes when I had finished reading this novel long back.
Majeed goes to Abu Dhabhi, looses a leg, then he comes back home, is rejected....
Basheer did a good job. But will Mamookka able to pull off the younger version of Majeed. If it is being done by a younger actor, then there will not be much for Mamookka to perform or they would have to develop the story.
