    Movie:Season

    Genre: Drama
    Release Date: 1989

    Cast:Mohanlal,Jagathy Sreekumar,Gavin Packard,Maniyanpillai Raju,Ashokan,Shari,Azeez,Thilakan & Oduvil Unnikrishnan

    Direction: Padmarajan
    Script: Padmarajan
    Music:Illayaraja

    Synopsis

The film starts with the protagonist Jeevan, portrayed by Mohanlal getting arrested and cops take him to the Central Prison, Poojappura, Thiruvananthapuram. It is the year 1987. The narration starts with Mohanlal's voice "My name is Jeevan. I feel so depressed to know that I can't see this snow filled morning and the street lamps for years; but little would benefit in regretting now".
This is a Malayalam film which follows a non-linear narration. Story starts when Jeevan is getting arrested for hitting a sub inspector. Gradually it's presenting the reason why he did that, to the audience. Jeevan was in jail for five years for a crime he never committed but by a European tourist named 'Fabien' (Gavin Packard). Jeevan was suspected for three murders and the court failed to prove two murders and Jeevan got framed for one because there was situational evidence. Jeevan is sentenced for seven years but his punishment has been shortened to five years because of his good behaviour at the prison.
The story now moves back to 1982, at Kovalam where Jeevan is running a restaurant. He also is involved in sale and purchase of several smuggled foreign goods along with transfer of foreign currency. Popularly and fondly called by everyone as 'Uncle', Jeevan is one of the richest businessman in Kovalam, and has no bad vices. He is a real mystery to all, as he also keeps everyone away from his personal life. Porinju (Ashokan)and Kanthi (Maniyan Pilla Raju), two jobless youths are involved in small time drug business to meet the both ends. Both have their own families and personal issues and dreams of being rich one day. They, one day meets Fabien, an European tourist, who wants them to get three kilos of brown sugar for huge price. Both Porinju and Kanthi are allured into this deal. Jeevan supports them by lending 1.5 lakhs, on the condition that they will give up drug business after this. Both Porinju and Kanthi leaves to Goa and comes back a week later at night with the stuff. They directly goes to the restaurant run by Jeevan and informs him about it. Jeevan warns them to be careful. Both the chaps informs Fabien about the stuff and asks him to reach below the lighthouse at night. But at night, Fabien plays foul and shoots down Porinju. Meantime Merlin (Leena Nair), the girl friend of Fabien breaks into the house of Jeevan and steals around four lakhs rupees along with gold. On getting the information Jeevan comes to the house, but find it completely ransacked. Kanthi, who got escaped from Fabien reaches Jeevan and informs him about the death of Porinju. He takes Jeevan to the hut where Fabien was staying with Merlin. But Fabien had within the time escaped with the currency and drugs. He had jilted even Merlin. She was assaulted and left back. Jeevan finds her with both hands and legs tied. She informs him that Fabien is on way and they wont be able to chase him. She also informs that he is a psychopath killer. Kanthi takes the car of Jeevan and leaves to chase Fabien, but is killed on way by him. The next day, police recovers the body of both Porinju and Kanthi. Jeevan is shocked to find that Merlin has also committed suicide by taking sleeping pills. Jeevan is main suspect as Kanthi's body was found in his car and merlin was found dead in his house. He is arrested and sentenced to jail. But prosecution couldn't nail for murders of Porinju and Kanthi as there were no proofs. He gets 5 year jail term for the death of Merlin. It was just weeks before his release that Fabien enters his jail. Jeevan agrees to help Fabien in escaping from jail, if he pays Rs 5 lakhs. After the release, Jeevan plans everything and is back in jail for a petty crime. His sole aim is to finish of Fabien. The film then jump cuts to the present. On the day of Gandhijayanthi, when, all the cops are busy with the celebrations. Jeevan escapes from jail with Fabien. On way, he collects Rs. 5 lakhs from an agent and pays it to Jeevan. After collecting the amount, Jeevan in a fiery fight finishes of Fabien. Jeevan goes back to central jail when his voice over comes in background with the visual of him driving the van and images of passing street lights in the plain glass of the van "I am getting sad to know that I am going to miss these street lights again.I had great comfort when she (one of his friend's lovers) accepted the money (that Jeevan took from Fabien) and the happy thing for me is that this time is that they won't have any situational evidences against me; but only evidence, the real evidence. Its on my shirt, on my face, on my hands...and everywhere ". He smiles triumphantly and reaches back at the prison. When the cops ask about Fabien, Jeevan walks with a winning smile and opens the door of the van where the cops find Fabien's corpse.

    Box Office

The film, though was a failure at the box office, stands apart because of Padmarajan's story-telling style, realistic portrayal of drug trade in Kovalam and flawless performance of Mohanlal and is considered now as a cult classic. Many feel that this movie was much ahead of time and if it would had released in late nineties, would had broken several collection records.

    Cast/Crew

    Direction: S Nottani
    Produced by: T R Sundaram
    Script: Muthukulam Raghavan Pillai
    Music: K K Aroor, Ibrahim
    Cinematography: Bado Gushwalker

    K. K. Aroor (K. Kunjunair) as Balan
    M. K. Kamalam as Sarasa
    Master Madanagopal as young Balan
    M. V. Shanku as Dr. Govindan Nair

    Specialty: First Talkie In Malayalam

    Synopsis

The film centers on a pair of sibling orphans, Balan and his younger sister, who are abused and exploited by a villainous stepmother who also connives to take over the family estate of her weak-willed husband. The two children are ultimately rescued from her evil clutches by a pure-hearted lawyer. When new trials arise, Balan bravely sacrifices his life so that his sister may live a little easier.

The film was a stereotype of the themes of early Indian cinema, particularly South Indian cinema

    Plot Detail

Balan (Master Madanagopal) and Sarasa (Baby Malathi), are children of Dr. Govindan Nair (M. V. Shanku) by his first wife. Meenakshi (K. N. Lakshmi), the second wife, tortures Balan and Sarasa. She even hatches a plot to kill them and take over the entire wealth of Nair. Meenakshi is severely punished by Nair when he comes to know of her motives. Nair dies of heart attack. Meenakshi marries a wicked city wastrel Kittu Panicker (K. Gopinath). Balan and Sarasa flee from home as a result.

Barrister Prabhakara Menon (C. O. N. Nambiar) gives refuge to Balan and Sarasa and brings them up as his own children. In the will executed by Nair before his death, all his wealth is assigned to Meenakshi on condition that she take care of his children.
When Meenakshi and Kittu Panicker come to know about the stipulations in the will, they trace out the children. Kittu Panicker kidnaps the children from Prabhakara Menon’s home. Shanku (Alleppey Vincent) comes to know about the plans of Meenakshi and Kittu Panciker and rescues the children. He uses them in street shows. Balan and Sarasa escape from Shanku. Sarasa is taken away by a labour contractor while Balan is asleep. She is forced to work in an estate. Sarasa (M. K. Kamalam) grows up here. Balan (K. K. Aroor) also reaches the same estate as a labourer. This estate is owned by Barrister Prabhakara Menon.

Prabhakara Menon identifies Balan and Sarasa. Balan traces out the will executed by his father and Prabhakara Menon files suit against Meenakshi. She is tried by the court of law and punished. A furious Meenakshi shoots Prabhakara Menon, but the bullet from the pistol takes the life of Balan who jumps in between to save Menon. Menon marries Sarasa. They name their son, Balan. The film ends with Menon, and Sarasa paying homage at the tomb of Balan.

There were 24 songs in the film. Most of them followed popular Hindi and Tamil film tunes of the time. Gramophone records of the songs were not produced. The most popular song was a solo by M. K. Kamalam ‘Jaathaka doshathale...’ It was a direct copy of the solo by M. K. Radha from the Tamil film ‘Sathi Leelavathi’ (1936). ‘Theyila thottathle...,’ the Tamil song based on Chenjurutti raga became so popular that it was later sung by Carnatic musicians in concerts.

Significance in the History of Malayalam Cinema

The first Malayalam cinema was produced and directed by J C Daniel. His film Vigathakumaran was released in 1928, but failed economically. The economic failure of Vigathakumaran discouraged him from producing further films.

The ill luck of Malayalam cinema continued. The second film Marthandavarma based on a novel of the same name by C V Raman Pillai, was produced by Sunderraj in 1933. But due to a legal confrontation regarding the rights of the film, the producer had to withdraw the film from cinema halls after few exhibitions. Had it not been for the legal embargo, the film would have had a great impact on the cinema of South India. By Marthandavarma the history of silent Malayalam cinema too came to an end.

Indian cinema had already entered the talkie age even before Marthandavarma was released. Balan, the first Malayalam cinema with a sound track was released in 1938. Produced by Tamilian, T R Sunderam at the Modern Theatres, Balan was directed by Notani.

    Box Office/Critical Acclaim

First sucessful malayalam film. Followed by the success of Balan, Jnambika was released in 1940. After Prahlada (1941).

Even though this film could be considered irrelevant in artistic sense, its economic success created a base to the Malayalam film industry.

‘Balan’ was a huge hit. The splendid sets, camera by the German cinematographer Bado Gushwalker, sound recording by Ishwar Singh and editing by Varghese were good. All the artists who performed in the film were new to this medium. The acting was not natural, and resembled more of a stage play.

Compared to Tamil sound film, ‘Kalidas’ the Malayalam film is regarded much better by film critics. ‘Balan’ had an original script and dialogues in Malayalam, whereas in ‘Kalidas’, the artists spoke in their own mother tongue deviating from the original script and dialogues. The different characters spoke in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi!
