The makers of Aakashathinte Niram are planning to release the film in the US to gain direct entry to the Academy Awards’ list

While there’s been a hue and cry after Barfi! was announced as India’s official entry to the Oscars for foreign film category over the other ‘original’ flicks in the final shortlist, the makers of Malayalam film Aakashathinte Niram have chosen action over words.
The team behind the Indrajith-starrer is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to reach the Oscars and are now planning to make the cut into the list of the Academy Award for the Best Film by releasing the movie in the US.
Its director Dr Biju says, “We are planning to release the film in Los Angeles by November first week to see if we can gain direct entry to the Academy Awards’ list. As per the Oscar qualifying rules, a film should run at least for a week in US theatres if it has to be eligible for consideration.”
He says once the film makes it past the initial hurdle, the team will apply for a direct entry and would know the outcome by December end.
Incidentally, another Malayalam movie Thattathin Marayathu, which has run more than a week in US theatres, is also eligible according to the rules if the makers decide to go for it.
As for the size of the playing field of the foreign film category for
which Barfi! was selected, an astounding 68 films have been entered in the long list with Italy’s Golden Bear-winning Caesar Must Die, Uruguay’s The Delay, Israel’s Fill the Void and Switzerland’s Sister being the frontrunners.
As far as Aakashathinte Niram is concerned, the film is still enjoying a good run at the international festival circuit. After being India’s lone entry to the Shanghai Film Festival, the flick will be screened at Chicago International Film Festival this month, Tallin Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia in November and was recently selected for the Panorama section of International Film Festival of India, Goa.
Biju, whose previous movie Veettilekkula Vazhi also enjoyed similar success, says, “Film festivals are a platform where the best in international cinema gather and you come to know about the changes that are happening and how there is an even greater purpose for movies than the commercial angle that we are obsessed about.”
He says that in Kerala, movies get stereotyped as art films once they are screened at film festivals and win awards. “It’s a completely wrong notion. In other countries, theatres open doors for films that do well in the festival circuit but in our state, once your movie is sent to foreign festivals, the theatre owners are reluctant to take it up,” he says.
