Review by D Arkness in Ladies & Gentleman
Synopsis - Chandrabose (Mohanlal), who is an aimless drunkard, decides to change the lives of a few people when he encounters, Sharath (Krish).
Script & Direction - Before getting into the detailed analysis, let me share what I expected from a Siddhique after his last 2-3 films. A film which is packaged with comedy, melodrama and suspense/twist under the backup of a poor screenplay. Now Ladies & Gentleman, really didn't disappoint me when i go with such expectations. But since I am not a fan of such kinda movies, it wasn't exactly a good experience. Just as I expected, the film is mixture of everything you can think about. If you are looking for comedy, there is comedy of every sort where a percentage scores. If its a melodrama, he shown all signs of his Guru, Fazil. If its suspense/twist, yeah its there but not at all effective. Then there are songs and 2 action sequences.
The biggest problem with Ladies & Gentleman, again as expected, is its screenplay. If you are thinking about the story, it reminds you of Sathyan Anthikad's "Innate Chintha Vishayam". And Siddhique is inspired by quite a number of movies which I am unable to reveal it since it may give out the so called suspense factor. Another big problem is its length. Both halves were lengthy, where the second half was a bit too lengthy and was boring because of the aimless narration. Seriously, I was waiting for it to end and considered the way Siddhique ended the movie, it may have looked better if the second half was treated better. Also the film carried loads of character which was the main reason for unnecessary sequences and thus led to the length of the movie.
Regarding positives, the frames and some comic scenes are the ones to mentioned. Also the film doesn't carry any double meaning/ adult comedies. It was kind of surprising to see the amont of English lines in this movie. New Gen Effect???.
Cast & Performance - Mohanlal is the saving grace in the movie. Its his mannerisms, energy and charisma that was keeping the audience to sit through the first half. But I felt like he was totally disinterested in most of the sequences during the second half. Those who expected his famous drunken act, they have to be slightly disappointed after experiencing the famous ones. Krish Sathar was below average in his debut inspite of getting a lengthy role.Kalabhavan Shajoon didn't irrtate us as expected and at times his scenes were the saving grace during the second half. Ganeshkumar was a miscast as Mamtha's father. Manoj K Jayan didn't have nothing to do. Sivaji Guruvayoor lend some energy with his performance along with Krishnakumar's Achayan cameo.Abu Salim & Chali Pala lend their presence in small roles. Meera Jasmine was irritating with her overacting. Mamtha was decent and Padmapriya looked weird in that hair-style. Mithra Kurien really didn't have much to do in this rush while Subi suddenly disappeared after her opening scene (blessing indeed ;) ).
Songs & Background Score - Ratheesh Vega's soundtracks were strictly average and thus was slightly disappointing when you consider Siddhique's film. "Pranayame..." is a romantic song which was used to depict the romantic relationship between Chandrabose and Ashwathi. "Ladies & Gentleman.." track infused some energy to the listless second half. "Palaniram Padarumi (Hosanna).." was meant to show the inspired lives of the youngsters after meeting Chandrabose. Rest of the songs were played during the opening and end credits respectively. Deepak Dev's background score supported the movie quite well except the rap during the action sequences.
Technical Expertise - After the Pranayam experience, we cannot say that Satheesh did a good job as far as frames are concerned especially during the "Pranyame.." were you can see Meera's make up (almost in all her scenes. But it was a decent work. Gourishankar may have no idea on what to cut and what to keep during the editing. The make-up department will be surely questioned for their shoddy work especially Meera's & Ganeshkumar's make up n Padmapriya's hairstyle.
Bottomline - There are two ways of seeing it....If you are a fan of Siddhique's recent entertainers, there is a huge chance for you to like it and it won't disappoint you. Rest can make their own call. Unfortunately, I am not a fan of such kind of films.
Ratings - 4.25/10
