The 12 hour hartal called by the LDF on Wednesday affected the construction work of the Kochi Metro Rail. The civil works of the project, which is progressing on a war footing, were affected and the contractors who arranged various equipment on a rental basis incurred financial loss as a result.
Meanwhile, amidst the furore caused by the hartal, the construction work at the third reach of the project began on Wednesday with the Bhoomi Pooja. After commencing the initial procedures for piling, the work was stopped and the representatives of Soma, who undertook the work of the third stretch from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Ernakulam South said that the work will begin in full swing in the coming days.
Regarding the construction on the fourth reach from Ernakulam South to Tripunithura Pettah, DMRC project director P Sriram said that they had a detailed discussion with ERA Constructions, which undertook the civil work on the stretch, and the work would begin soon.
Among the other works that were carried out on Wednesday are the canal excavation and road widening works at the Banerjee Road.
Piling works before the Chengampuzha Park at Edapally and the road widening works on the stretch between Kalamassery and Pathadipalam were put off on account of the hartal. The major reason for not taking up these works, according to DMRC officials, is that the local workers failed to reach the site on time owing to the hartal. Though a single day’s work will not affect the time frame of the project, the representatives of the construction company said that the recurrence of such hartals in future will have an adverse affect on the porgress of Kochi Metro Rail project as even a one hour delay will count when the work enters full swing. Earlier KMRL MD Elias George, district collector P I Sheikh Pareeth and Sriram had attended the Bhoomi Pooja and inspected the works on the third reach. ‘Metroman’ E Sreedharan had held discussions with Era Constructions. He also visited the construction sites and analysed the progress of the work.
