Facebook Beta Updated With Redesigned UI and Performance Enhancements

Facebook is one of the apps that is in a pretty dreadful condition on Windows Phone, the app is buggy, clunky and slow; today however Microsoft have pushed a new update for the Facebook Beta app which brings a beautiful new clean design to the app, as well as some new features.

welcome update, as it brings a nicer whiter palate tone to the app (it looks like the iOS app a bit, which is good). Other parts of the app such as the friends list and the navigation bar have also been redesigned and reorganized; making it much nicer to use. The groups page has also been refreshed as you can see in the image above, bringing it closer to the desktop and tablet experience on other OSes.

This update also brings the much requested ability to upload videos from your phone straight to the app.

Overall it’s a pretty nifty update, and it certainly seems smoother, but that could always just be the standard placebo effect. The Official changelog listed is:

    Updated design
    Improved performance
    Video upload
    Support for additional languages

    update

    Nokia Z Launcher: hands-on (Video)

Just hours ago, Nokia let loose its second major volley at Android this year, following the earlier introduction of the Nokia X family: the pre-beta release of the new Z Launcher. On its surface, the replacement Android launcher is a tool for giving users quick access to the apps and people they need most, when they need them, but more than that it’s also a way for the new Nokia (or what’s left of it, following Microsoft eating-up its Devices & Services arm) to show off what it can still bring to the smartphone field.

In our announcement post we covered some of the basic functionality, including the sketch-on-screen letter recognition system that gives the Z Launcher its name, but what’s it actually like to use? Is the launcher as smart as Nokia would like us to believe, knowing what apps we’re likely to use before we even pick up our phone? Is that letter-sketching interface really a convenient way to access apps, and does it work as well as it seems to in Nokia’s promo clips?

And as a “pre-beta” release, just how rough around the edges is Z Launcher right now? Is it something that’s going to hold up to the rigors of installation on your daily driver? We went hands-on with Z Launcher to find out for ourselves – watch on to see what we learned:

Simple, stylish and full of predictions

Nokia certainly caught us off guard by suddenly throwing an Android launcher out into the world. Known as Z Launcher, the project is currently in limited pre-beta status but anyone with a supported device can register, download and take it for a spin. So that's exactly what we did.

There's really not much to the Z Launcher. The main homescreen displays the 6 apps, contacts or web links that it thinks you're going to want to use right now. Over time, the launcher should learn your habits – even depending on what time of day it is – and change what it displays to suit. The dock down the bottom is – at least for now – non-customizable and fills with common stock apps such as the phone, camera and messaging apps. Interestingly it added Google Camera here for us on the LG G3 and not the LG camera app.

Beyond the homescreen is an app drawer that follows the same style as the homescreen and contains just an alphabetized list of all your apps. No widgets, since the Z Launcher doesn't support them. But scrolling, at least in our test, is silky smooth and so far we've come across no dramas at all.

The hidden talent of the Z Launcher is it's gesture control. Trace a letter on the homescreen and it'll show you apps, web links and contacts beginning with that letter. Trace another letter and it'll narrow down the selection even more. If you make a mistake, a swipe to the left will erase the last letter. It's pretty accurate and actually pretty snappy to use.

Of course, it's the predictive side of Z Launcher that sits at the heart and it's something we'll need to use it a while for to get a real idea on. But it's an interesting start, if nothing else. Z Launcher is currently in 'pre-beta' and is being offered for download to a limited number of users right now.
