The combination of Ajith - Vishnu did wonders in Billa and when the rejoin again its sure to create some waves. Right from day one Arrambam had a huge hype surronding it and reached its peak during the the release time. So does the movie live up to the expectations?
The story starts with bomb blasts in 3 places in Mumbai and its not some terrorists who planted the bomb, but our hero Thala. Next he kidnaps Arya, a brilliant hacker, with the help of Nayanthara and asks him to take down a tv channel network. Arya has no other choice but to help Ajith in his plans as Arya's girlfriend Tapsee is in their custody. Arya manages to inform police about Ajith, and he is caught leading to the intermission scene. You think the stage was set perfectly for a thrilling 2nd half, but when Nayanthara starts with usual 'Do you know who he is'? 'Why is he doing all this?' dialogues in the beginning of the 2nd half you can pretty much sense whats gona happen next as it becomes you usual revenge drama. But still it manages to hold on your attention due to its racy script and slick making.
Ajith is back with his salt & pepper look after Mankatha and there is no other actor who can carry this look better than him. He plays a character with shades of grey similar to that Manaktha with some menacing villainy in the first half. His terrific screen presence and dialogue delivery are a major plus for the movie.
Arya as the hacker provides some light moments in the movie. He does the character with ease. Nayanthara does her role well and provides some oomph factor. Tapsee was irritating with her too girlish character. The villains Atul Kulkarni and Mahesh Manjerkar doesnt have much to do. Atul Kulkarni has very few scenes and Mahesh Manjerkar isnt menacing enough and becomes sort of comical towards the end of the movie. Kishore didnt had much to do in the movie and becomes your regular police character who comes in the climax.
Vishnu's films are known for their style quotient and Arrambham is stylishly shot by cinematographer Om Prakash. Yuvan - Vishnu combo has given some peppy songs in the past but that magic seems to be missing here. Out of the 4 songs in the movie only Arrambame and En Fuse Poche are catchy and the rest doesnt make an impression. BGM is again slight disappoinment considering Yuvan's pulsating BGM's for Billa and Mankatha. Editing is crisp. Going with urban feel of the movie, the stunts has been nicely done with no over the top action and Ajith who is known for his daredevil nature have done some risky ones. The VFX used in the blast scenes seems to be amatuerish.
The movie has a neat first half with thrills and frills but 2nd half is a bit of letdown considering momentum set initially and the logic aspect seems to go for a toss in the 2nd half. But the stylish making and racy screenplay helps in covering these.
Overall Arrambam is decent action thriller which will be surely lapped by Thala fans and for others its provide popcorn entertainment.
