old movies okke athinte original aspect ratioyil kanunnathu alle nallathu?....most old movies are shot in 4:3 aspect ratio....1980 kazhinjanu "cinemascope" vannathu (mukalilum thazheyum karutha varakal)....even in 80s a lot of movies don't use cinemascope....90silum a few movies are in 4:3 i guess....cropping will happen 4:3 when converted to 16:9....
for example, see the censor certificate of "kazhukan": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDZ_zPkIveY ....sides okke cropped aanu..
so even when converting to HD, 4:3 aspect ratio maintain cheyyunnathanu nallathu.

4:3 is good to watch on conventional TVs and smaller screens.
But on 40"+ TVs, it is not giving a good viewing experience.
Not just the movies, even the SD channels telecasting in 4:3.

they are still telecasting in 4:3 because many people still have 4:3 conventional TV screens....only a minority has HDTVs (these have 16:9 aspect ratio)....on HDTVs, 4:3 videos will be sandwiched between black bars....some HDTVs have a button on the remote which will fully fit the 4:3 videos to the screen....it's called 'wide', 'zoom' etc by different brands....but this is actually modifying the picture by stretching, cropping etc....i myself don't like to use this function on the tv.....i just watch it with the black bars....then i can be sure that i am seeing the original picture.

even youtube display area is 16:9....only manorama news is sandwiched....others are filling the area.

don't select 4:3 mode if picture is already full screen....for example if you are watching a channel and it is automatically showing full screen, don't select 4:3....when you change the channel and this channel has black bars, use the "wide" button to convert to full screen....

pinne it depends on the tv....some tv screens may show warning...ente tvkku prashnamilla.
