Cinema: Cinemax Vashi
Status : Housefull
Plot: The film borrows the basic premise of Singh is King. A lazy, fun loving Sardar who shirks all responsibilities and is a constant source of worry for his father. He is forced to go work for his father's friend who runs a casino at Goa. It is there he meets the heroine, who of course is chased by the baddies and is lying low in India. Love happens, villains find her, fight happens, movie ends.
That said, the movie is definitely a watchable affair. It has its funny moments and although its predominantly slapstick, it does make you laugh. And that ultimately is what you expect from a movie like this. There is a comedy track that runs parallel to the movie, just the kind you get in Tamil or Telugu, but thankfully not for too long.
Performances:
Akshay : Superb. Brimming with energy and he drives the film with his mannerisms. On top form after a long time. The dance, fights, comic expressions - good to see him enjoying on screen.
Amy :looks absolutely smashing. Her action sequences were decently choreographed, and unlike some heroines (tamannah in BB comes to mind) she pulls them off with enough ease, while looking tough.
Lara Dutta : was pretty good. Surprised to see her funny side.
Rest of the cast were decent, and most importantly, no one irritates you.
Songs are a big negative. Crassy and loud. "Tung tung" was an exception and it serves the purpose by dishing out some sights of Punjab, and also introduces the characters without wasting much time. "Aaja Mahi" is already quite a popular song at most functions in north, and didnt really have to be modified and made loud.
Prabhudeva should definitely change his idea of BGM, where its more pointers at how you should feel rather than letting the music do it for you. Just like Action Jackson where the bgm was all about screaming the character name or location of the scene, the bgm of Singh is Bling is a definite letdown.
An enjoyable first half is followed by a second half that lags a bit, with unwanted scenes, and an abrupt climax.
Do not expect a "good" movie, but it is worth a watch if you have some time to kill. The oft used expression " leave your brains at home" comes to mind.
Crowd response is good, should be a decent hit for Akki.
Rating: 2.75/5
Edit: PD compensates for his trashy characterisation of women in his previous outing Action Jackson, and you do sense that it is a deliberate attempt on his part. Good to learn from mistakes![]()
