'Oppam' wins the Onam box-office race!


Onam is one of most coveted seasons in Mollywood. The big stars usually reserve one of their promising ventures for this vacation season, when crowds are in a festive mood. This year there were some big names in the fray like Mohanlal, Dileep, Prithviraj and Kunchacko Boban. Meanwhile stars like Mammootty, Dulquer Salmaan, Nivin Pauly and Fahadh Faasil were missing from the scene. Here is a quick look at the Onam box office. We will not publish the figures as all of them are highly exaggerated and unbelievable. How can 100 to 120 screens playing a Malayalam film in Kerala get Rs 15 Cr plus gross collections in a week's time? The ratings are purely based on the pressure cinema theaters in Kerala experienced during Onam season.


No:1 Oppam
It has been pretty long since filmmaker Priyadarshan ruled the box office like the way his latest offering Oppam fared. He teamed up with his lucky mascot, superstar Mohanlal, in this crime thriller. The hero, who had no other Malayalam releases in 2016 before Oppam (both Vismayam and Janatha Garage were Telugu films), played a blind man. The script had quite a few loose ends, but Oppam set the cash registers ringing.


No:2 Oozham
Jeethu Joseph’s films are much awaited by the Malayali viewers, especially after My Boss, Memories and the spectacular Drishyam. The expectations were sky high as Jeethu teamed up with Prithviraj to play the lead in a revenge drama. The film received mixed reviews but the collections were reasonably good, as it had an early mover advantage of releasing on September 8.


No:3 Iru Mugan
Vikram's action packed Anand Shankar film produced and distributed by Shibu Thameens has taken a good opening and held on well for a week. It had also an early start by releasing on September 8 and could cash in due to Vikram's all round promotions in Kerala. The Nayanthara factor also helped the film to generate a huge opening.


No:4 Welcome to Central Jail
Dileep is the darling of the masses but his Onam release Welcome to Central Jail disappointed almost everyone. But the Janapriya Nayakan’s popularity among kids and family audiences ensured the film a good opening. Welcome to Central Jail, opened on Saturday two days after Oppam and Oozham, which proved to be a disadvantage. Anyway along with satellite rights it would be a profitable venture.


Kochauvva Paulo Ayyappa Coelho and Oru Muthassi Gadha
Kuchacko Boban revived his home production banner Udaya Pictures with Kochauvva Paulo Ayyappa Coelho. Jude Anthany Joseph’s return to direction after the breezy Ohm Shanthi Oshaan. The film took a poor opening due to lacklustre content and bad release strategy of pitting it against biggies in a festival season. Another film that suffered and did not get an opening was Oru Muthassi Gadha,which also had no big stars in its cast.Releasing days after Oppam established itself as a hit also proved to be a costly mistake for both the films.
