    Beast (2022)

Perfectly good, if disposable, popcorn entertainment.

Beast works well because it embraces its simplicity and sticks to its premise. There’s no needless filler or pointless melodrama. This creature feature has the right amount of thrills, and just enough plot to bring it all together.

    Focus (2015, Netflix)

Starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie

Pretty good romantic crime comedy with some interesting con games.

    Emergency Declaration (Korean, 2021)

This film makes us feel we are there. And so we really do care!

It's a story about heroism in which no one is a maverick. Everyone is vulnerable and sometimes overwhelmed, and everyone is reluctant to take chances with the people's lives until it's clear that the alternative is unthinkable. All kudos to the huge and impressive production effort, Emergency Declaration does such an outstanding job of plunging you into an engrossing scenario, that it doesn't even matter if you already know how it ends.

    Emily the Criminal (2022)

A banal so-called "thriller" that's so minimal you'll nearly forget it's even there.

Its basic conceit is intriguing, but Emily the Criminal doesn’t quite make the most of its potentially interesting premise. It isn't bad. Its just predictable and dully inconsequential.

    Watcher (2022)

A slow burn thriller that can be considered a tribute to Hitchcock-ian films. The film follows routine tropes of the genre but is one that grabs your attention wholly from the get-go. Thriving on a heart-pounding sound design, Watcher offers genuine tension and is as moody and atmospheric as it can get. It works well as a character study and as an exploration of a certain set of thematics but is otherwise a familiar film of the genre, but a good one at it.

    The Hobbit Trilogy (2012-2014)

Nowhere near LOTR trilogy but wildly entertaining! A good bunch of action set pieces and decent amount of heart.

    Confess, Fletch (2022)

If I had to sum it up in one word, it would be "charming." If I had two words, I'd add "quirky."

Confess, Fletch is witty and has an ace performance from Jon Hamm, but the mystery and big reveal left me underwhelmed. Enjoyed the first two acts, the last act felt sloppy, still, a lot of fun.
